There are some things that are difficult to discuss and/or debate. Politics, football, and religion are more than practical examples. But there's something else where people rarely agree: Car brands! With the intention of bringing clarity to the debate, we at Senhor Carros have created a ranking of the best-selling car brands in Brazil in the first half of 2020.
The time has come to set aside emotion and listen to reason. As the famous saying goes: Acceptance is easier than resistance. Check out which car brands currently sell the most in Brazil.

20. Kia
In 20th position in our ranking of best-selling brands is the South Korean automaker Kia. Between January and June, February was its best sales month, with 599 vehicles registered. The best-selling model during this period was the Kia Sportage. In total, during the first half of 2020, 2,351 vehicles of the brand were sold.
19. Land Rover
Occupying the 19th position in the ranking is the British company Land Rover. The automaker had its best sales month in June, reaching 579 vehicles sold. The most successful model was the Land Rover Discovery Sport, with a total of 907 units sold. In total, the brand sold 2,397 vehicles.
18. Audi
In 18th place, we have the famous German automaker with the four rings. Audi's best sales month was February with 760 cars sold. The model with the highest number of registrations was the Audi Q3, with 776 units sold. In total, between January and June, the automaker sold 2,405 cars.
17. Volvo
In 17th position, we have another German automaker that is gaining increasing market share in Brazil: Volvo. Similar to its compatriot, Audi, its best sales month was February, with 651 units registered. The most popular model among Brazilians was the... Volvo XC60 which had 1,092 units sold. In total, Volvo sold 2,684 vehicles in the first half of 2020.
16. BMW
In 16th position we have another German brand: BMW. Widely known, the automaker had its best month commercially in June with 1,172 units registered. The best-selling vehicle was the BMW X1 with 1,103 units sold. In total, BMW sold 4,498 cars in the first six months of this year.
15. Mercedes-Benz
And we continue with the German automakers. In 15th position we have the brand that has been dominating Formula 1 in recent years, but without a worthy impact on the Brazilian market. Joking aside, the brand had its best month in June with 1,155 vehicles sold. The Mercedes-Benz C-Class was the best-selling model with 1,107 sales. In the first half of the year as a whole, the German automaker sold 4,595 vehicles in Brazil.
14. Peugeot
In the ranking of the best-selling brands in Brazil in 2020, the French automaker Peugeot occupies 14th place. January was the best month for the manufacturer, with 1,298 units registered. The best-selling model was the Peugeot 2008 with 1,924 units sold. In total, Peugeot sold 4,801 vehicles in the first six months in Brazil.
13. Mitsubishi
In 13th place we have the Japanese company Mitsubishi. The famous automaker with the three diamonds had its best sales month in January, with 1,291 vehicles sold. The model with the highest number of buyers was the L200 Triton, with 3,626 units sold. In total, the automaker registered 6,454 vehicles in Brazil during the first half of the year.
12. Citroen
Continuing our ranking of brands, we have the French brand Citroen in 12th position. For the French, February has been the best sales month so far, with 1,922 vehicles registered. The model with the highest number of units sold was the... C4 Cactus, which reached a record of 4,953 units sold. In total, 6,892 vehicles were sold this year alone.
11. Caoa Cherry
In 11th place we have another South Korean brand. Caoa Chery had its best sales figures in March, the first month of the pandemic in Brazil, reaching 1,927 vehicles sold. The top-selling model was the Tiggo 5X with 3,958 units sold. In the first half of the year, the automaker sold 7,385 vehicles.
10. Nissan
Upon reaching the top 10 of our ranking of best-selling brands, a significant difference can be observed from a numerical standpoint. The Japanese automaker occupying 10th place had its best sales month in February, with 8,353 vehicles sold. Nissan's best-selling model was the Frontier, with 3,576 units sold. In the first half of the year, the automaker sold a total of 28,801 vehicles nationwide.
9. Honda
Here we have a double dose of Japanese brands. Honda is a brand that needs no introduction and has been a well-known name for years, trusted by many Brazilians. Its best sales month was February, when 8,722 models were registered. The model that dominated sales was the HR-V with no less than 13,052 units sold. In total, between January and June, Honda sold 34,310 cars.
8. Jeep
Jeep is one of the fastest-growing brands in Brazil, as evidenced by its eighth position in our ranking of the best-selling brands in Brazil. February was the best month for the automaker, which sold no less than 10,084 vehicles. The best-selling model was the Renegade, with 20,711 units registered so far. In the first six months of 2020, Jeep sold a total of 38,539 cars.
7. Toyota
Toyota holds a respectable 7th place among brands with the highest number of cars sold, achieving a significant advantage over its main competitor, Honda. January was its best sales month, with 15,112 units sold. The best-selling model is the Corolla, with 16,982 units sold so far. In total, the brand has registered 58,801 cars between January and June.
6. Renault
The French automaker occupies an honorable and positive 6th place in our brand ranking, and like Toyota, had its best month of the year in January, when it sold 15,112 vehicles. The brand's best-selling model was the remarkable little Kwid, with 23,648 units registered. In total, during the first half of 2020, Renault sold 59,960 cars.
5. Ford
Opening our top five, we have the American company Ford, which had its best month so far in February, when it sold 15,067 cars. The model that dominated sales was the Ford Ka, with 29,585 units sold. During this measurement period, the North American automaker sold 60,472 vehicles.
4. Hyundai
Here we have another South Korean company in our ranking. In February alone, the automaker sold 16,463 vehicles, and as expected, the best-selling model was... HB20Hyundai, which currently holds second place in car sales for 2020, with 32,864 units sold. In total, Hyundai sold 63,302 vehicles in the first half of this year.
3. Fiat
In the lowest position on the podium we have Fiat. January was the best month for the Italian brand, with 25,895 vehicles sold. The best-selling model so far for the automaker was the Fiat Strada, with 22,851 units sold, closely followed by the Argo, which sold 22,729 units. In total, the brand has already reached 109,070 cars sold in 2020.
2. Volkswagen
In second place in our ranking of best-selling brands is the German Volkswagen. Known for its reliability and functional, relatively affordable vehicles, the brand had its best sales month in February, with 31,621 units sold. As expected, the Gol was the best-selling model, with 24,827 units registered. In total, between January and June of this year, the brand has already sold 124,165 units.
1. Chevrolet
GM has finally regained the trust of Brazilians, and the Onix is largely responsible for this, being by far the sales leader since 2015 and having sold 60,271 units this year alone. For the American brand, January was the best sales month, with 35,065 units sold. In total, the brand has already sold 134,344 cars in the first half of the year alone.
Conclusion
Although the presence of some brands was expected in our ranking, some unexpected surprises also made the list. Admittedly, Chevrolet was expected to be at the top due to the success of the Onix, however it's great to see brands like Kia and Land Rover in the top 20 and even Jeep well-positioned within the top 10.
