Pros and cons of the Toyota Corolla
Discover all the pros and cons of the Toyota Corolla and find out how the model performs in daily, constant use.
Pro: Design
The first positive point on the list of pros and cons of the Toyota Corolla is its design. The model, which underwent few changes from 2020 to 2021, managed to become even better.
Once called an "old man's car," the model has evolved, and today it's not unreasonable to say that the sedan has an aggressive and even sporty look with more fluid and focused lines.
In terms of design, one thing is certain: Wherever the Corolla goes, it attracts attention, and that's definitely a positive point.
Pros: Stability and fun to ride
The Toyota Corolla had its center of gravity lowered by about 10 mm, and although it seems like a small amount, it made a big difference.
With this subtle change and all the assistance from the stability and traction controls, the model is stable and offers a very fun driving experience.
The angle of attack allows for aggressive cornering, giving the model handling similar to that of a sports car.
Pros: Handling
The new TNGA platform has done wonders for the Corolla.
While the previous generation had to resort to a firmer suspension to achieve good handling, this current generation has adopted a rear suspension with a rigid base to take a step further in handling without sacrificing the comfort expected of a large sedan.
The standard 16- and 17-inch wheels further enhance the comfort and handling proposition thanks to the higher tire profiles.
The electric power steering has excellent calibration and communication at both low and high speeds. When placed in extreme conditions, the Corolla points towards the inside of the curves without causing any surprise.
And if the driver is reckless, there's no problem, because the traction and stability control is there to help.
Pros: Combustion-powered mechanical assembly
The 2.0-liter engine is one of the main positive points on the list of pros and cons of the Toyota Corolla. Although the engine is "only naturally aspirated," it competes equally with opponents that have turbocharged engines.
In daily use, the Corolla is agile, and for those who prefer highway driving, the model has the power to easily maintain speed on any road and perform safe overtaking maneuvers.
Pros: Hybrid set
The protagonist of hybrid versions It's a powertrain that combines a 1.8 flex-fuel combustion engine with two electric motors located next to the transmission. Together, they produce up to 173 horsepower.
As with the Prius, it's possible to monitor the system's workflow via the dashboard or multimedia center, which shows whether the combustion engine, the electric motors, or all three are in operation.
When you take your foot off the accelerator or apply the brake, energy is recovered and returned to the battery.
The hybrid system in both the Corolla and the Prius is self-charging, so there's no need to plug the car in.
In the city, electric motors can, on their own, move the car in congested traffic or when maneuvering, and the "entry" threshold for the combustion engine, however, is not very high.
By accelerating a little harder, the combustion engine wakes up to combine with the electric motors and provide power to the car.
By pressing a button (EV), it is possible to drive exclusively using the electric motors, but only at low speeds. When the car is turned off, a kind of "analyzer" appears on the dashboard and shows whether you are driving economically.
In addition to good performance and functionality, the hybrid version, as expected, offers good fuel consumption levels.
Pros: Safety features
Continuing our list of pros and cons of Toyota CorollaAnother very positive highlight is the model's safety.
Maintaining the 7 airbags and ESP from previous models, the Corolla continues to evolve in terms of structural safety, as well as active safety.
Within this aspect, the highlight is Toyota Safety Sense. A suite of driving assistance systems that includes a series of electronic aids for the driver, making driving even safer.
This combination of systems originates from the RAV4 SUV and aims to enhance driver peace of mind, especially on the highway.
But the truth is that, both in urban and highway driving, the Corolla is a real marvel in terms of safety, and that's something that should always be highlighted.
Pros: Comfort
Comfort is a feature that accompanies the Corolla in both its combustion engine and hybrid versions. In both cases, the engines, combined with the transmissions, perform effectively.
They allow the vehicle to run smoothly and without any jolts. Furthermore, the quietness of the cabin is something that is very pleasing in terms of acoustic comfort.
Another aspect that contributes to onboard comfort is the rear suspension, which is now independent and uses inclined shock absorbers to reduce impacts in the cabin.
The new platform also contributes to a more stable ride. And finally, it must be said that the seats have been redesigned and are now more comfortable.
The interior space is the same as before, and in our opinion, the top-of-the-line version deserved a rear seat air vent.
Cons: Fuel consumption of the combustion engine version
The Corolla's 2.0 naturally aspirated engine is modern and features advanced technology with a direct and indirect fuel injection system, and variable valve timing for intake and exhaust, resulting in good performance.
However, when compared to competing models, such as the Cruze or the Honda Civic, the Corolla's fuel consumption figures are somewhat high.
Although this is a negative point, it shouldn't be seen as a major problem.
Cons: Brazilian package
And to close our list of pros and cons of Toyota Corolla We need to talk about what's called the Brazil package.
Toyota Brazil states that it was forced to make some choices focused on the Brazilian market rather than bringing the global Corolla here due to costs.
Thus, the equipment "adapted" to the Brazilian market included the lever-operated handbrake and the multimedia center, which required a plastic cover on the back that may clash with the interior design.
Other items that were left out of our Brazilian Corolla were the pantographic arms on the trunk lid and the gas spring for hood support.
Conclusion
We've said it a few times and we'll keep saying it: there's no such thing as a 100% car, but after checking the list of pros and cons of the Toyota Corolla, it's easy to conclude that the model is almost perfect and that owning one is truly like a dream come true.
