2021 Hyundai Tucson: Check out what's new
After appearing in a few images, the South Korean brand decided to fully reveal all the new features that will make up the new version of the Tucson.
According to the brand's CEOs, the goal is to recapture the admiration for the model that was quite prevalent when it was launched here. Looking at the photos, you might even ask yourself: Is that the Tucson?
The new Tucson looks quite bold and even radical. This feeling is quickly noticeable when looking at the LED daytime running lights integrated into the grille. But the changes aren't just aesthetic.
Scheduled to arrive at European dealerships by the end of this year, the SUV will feature mild-hybrid and conventional hybrid versions.
In addition, the automaker promises a plug-in hybrid for early 2021.
The visual impact is striking.
The visual impact of the 2021 Hyundai Tucson is striking and beautiful!
The model features a unique LED daytime running light style inside the front grille called Parametric Hidden Lights, a key element in the vehicle's updated styling!
When the lights are off, the front grille takes on a dark appearance but displays a lush, glossy texture. But when the ignition is switched on, the daytime running LEDs light up, creating a signature unlike any other.
This is undoubtedly the crucial point of the renewal proposed and achieved by the brand!
Design looks laser cut
The lines of the new Tucson are quite fluid and feature sharp angles with the use of geometric shapes very similar to precious jewels like a faceted diamond.
These new angular shapes of the model can also be seen in the wheels, which have been completely redesigned. Even their arches are different and feature a rather complex side treatment.
Another point that draws attention in the design is the presence of a continuous chrome profile that runs along the top of the windows, from the rearview mirrors to the C-pillar.
The rear is another point that deserves attention and confirms the brand's desire to change the SUV's style.
Just a glance at the taillights reveals two vertical lines connected by a horizontal bar that runs across the entire tailgate. This is a trend that's becoming increasingly common in many SUVs from various brands.
There are other interesting details present in the new Tucson, such as the positioning of the brand logo in a way that creates a subtle texture on the vehicle's rear window.
Another point that combines style and functionality is the fact that the windshield wiper is located at the top of the roof, hidden under the roof spoiler.
More space
As expected, the 2021 Hyundai Tucson has grown, both overall and in its cabin.
The model is now 4.50 meters long, 1.86 meters wide, and has a wheelbase of 2.28 meters.
All of this change is due to the new platform. This extra space provides more room for rear seat occupants, even in hybrid versions that have batteries installed under the rear seats.
Another point that draws a lot of attention regarding space is the trunk. In the mild-hybrid diesel version, there are 546 liters available. In the non-electrified variant, the space is even greater: 620 liters.
With the rear seats folded down, the cargo space almost triples, reaching an incredible 1,799 liters.
Refined interior
The interior of the new Tucson can be described as clean and refined, combining technology, space, and easy-to-reach controls. The idea is to convey a feeling of being bigger and better than it actually is.
There is a horizontal line that runs across the entire top of the doors and center console, which increases the feeling of spaciousness and further highlights the 10.2-inch multimedia center.
The ability to control the air conditioning via buttons on the touchscreen is also noteworthy. After all, the gadget's physical controls have been completely abandoned.
The instrument panel is positioned lower than usual on the console and looks like a tablet installed behind the steering wheel.
Another item that draws attention is the gear shift lever which no longer exists. It has been replaced by buttons that are somewhat functional.
Thus, the "gap that appeared" includes an inductive cell phone charger, since the multimedia center is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly.
Ambient lighting is another highlight.
The system features 64 different colors with 10 intensity levels, while the finish can be in black leather or fabric, black and white leather, or two different shades of blue.
Security-focused technology surprises.
The automaker continues to develop the next generation of the Bluelink system.
With this, the owner can check a range of information about the vehicle via their cell phone, such as fuel level, geolocation in the parking lot, and lock and unlock the doors, for example.
In addition to the automatic braking system that is becoming mandatory in Europe, the 2021 Hyundai Tucson features a system called Junction Turning. This system detects if a car is coming from the opposite direction when turning left.
In addition, there are features such as lane keeping assist, driver fatigue alert, adaptive cruise control, and cross-traffic alert. This increases safety.
Another interesting innovation in terms of technology and safety is the Blind-spot Collision Avoidance Assist.
This is an evolution of blind spot monitoring that, in addition to warning the driver about cars and motorcycles in the blind spot, is able to brake the front wheel on the opposite side of the lane change to slow the car down and reduce the chances of a collision.
The model is also equipped with a 360º camera system, and the hybrid version features a remote parking system for autonomous maneuvering.
Motorization
Hyundai intends to cover all possible engine types with the arrival of the new SUV.
So, in addition to traditional gasoline or diesel-powered combustion engines, there will also be engines with a 48V mild hybrid system, a conventional hybrid, and a plug-in hybrid.
There's only one left. Option 100 Electric which should arrive in the near future.
Conventional engine
The most basic option features the conventional engine, which will have the 1.6 T-GDI Smartstream engine under the hood.
This is a state-of-the-art four-cylinder turbo engine capable of generating 150 horsepower with a 6-speed manual transmission and variable front-wheel or all-wheel drive.
Mild hybrid versions
The 48V mild-hybrid versions will be available with a turbocharged gasoline engine, front-wheel drive, and a 6-speed manual transmission.
By paying a little more, you can get a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
In the case of the diesel engine, the DCT transmission will be the only option, although all-wheel drive will remain optional.
Hybrid Version
And at the top of the line we have the Tucson Hybrid which adopts the same 1.6 T-GDI engine, but with an added 60 hp (44.2kW) electric motor backing up with a 1.49 kWh lithium-ion battery.
This version delivers a total of 230 combined horsepower and a powerful torque of 35.7 kgfm. It features an automatic transmission with an optional all-wheel drive.
There is still a plug-in hybrid system promised by the brand, but they haven't said anything about it. The only thing known so far is that this version will feature the same 1.6 turbo engine.
Pricing and launch of the 2021 Hyundai Tucson
At this point you must be wondering: Okay, but how much will the completely redesigned SUV cost?
That's a question that still doesn't have an answer!
However, based on the current model prices, we at Senhor Carros estimate that the model may have starting prices in the range of R$ 170 thousand, potentially reaching R$ 220 thousand in the most complete versions.
The model is scheduled to launch in Europe at the end of the year and in the first half of 2021. Here in Brazil, its arrival is expected in the second half of next year.
Conclusion
The SUV market is attracting increasing attention from automakers due to the lack of slowdown.
In September a article from infomoney magazine It was revealed that SUVs currently represent 35% of the Brazilian vehicle market.
It is believed that this number should remain the same or even increase in 2021 due to expected launches in the sector.
Furthermore, the ample space, technology, and robustness in traffic make vehicles of this size an almost obvious choice.
