Mid-size pickup trucks are multi-functional vehicles, as they can handle city streets, highways, dirt roads, and carry large amounts of cargo without losing power. From this perspective, we can say that the 2020 Hilux is a true success in these aspects.
The Toyota Hilux, the best-selling pickup truck in the Brazilian market in recent years, embodies what a mid-size pickup should be. It's strong, powerful, easily overcomes obstacles, and has a large cargo capacity.
For this year, the model received minor adjustments, aiming to maintain its position at the top among mid-size pickup trucks.
Check out the new features of the 2020 Hilux in the article we at Senhor Carros created especially for you.
The history of the Pickup Truck
The Hilux is an older pickup truck from the brand that was launched in 1968 as an option to replace models of that era.
At its launch, the model only featured a simple cab and cargo bed, and basic engines capable of generating only 109 horsepower.
In 1972, the second generation was launched, which, in general, did not undergo major changes in terms of aesthetics. The Hilux gained a few centimeters and arrived in America with three engine options: 1.8, 2.0, and 2.2. All powered by gasoline.
In 1978, Toyota launched the third generation of the Hilux with a series of improvements. Double cab and 4x4 drive were the main new features, along with a diesel engine and a three-speed automatic transmission.
The fourth generation of the Hilux stood out for its increased range of engines and expansion into various markets, reaching the South American market for the first time, although production and sales were limited to Uruguay.
As expected, the Hilux continued to evolve, gaining more rounded lines and contours, although it still boasted a somewhat boxy cabin. Toyota added a series of improvements and reached different markets, giving the pickup a reputation for reliability.
The 2020 Hilux is part of the seventh generation of the pickup truck. With an aggressive look, the model received some improvements, making it more comfortable and connected, without sacrificing its robustness and reliability.
Unofficial reports suggest that 2021 will mark the arrival of the next generation of the famous pickup truck.

Toyota Hilux 2020: Even safer in all versions
The main new features of the 2020 Hilux are focused on safety. The new model now has seven airbags – front, side, and curtain airbags. All versions include airbags.
In addition, the SR and Standard versions are now equipped with traction and stability control and hill start assist. The diesel SR version also includes hill descent control.
Wheel locks are present on the GR-S, SRX, SRV, and SR versions, and the GR-S, SRX, and SRV versions also have a spare tire lock.
New equipment
In terms of equipment, the 2020 Hilux also has new features. The main one is the multimedia center, with an eight-inch screen, available for the GR-S, SRX, and SRV versions.
This is a very technologically advanced device that allows you to zoom in on images or the GPS map; the gadget has also been enhanced with more precise routes and 3D landmarks.
In addition, the system also features digital TV, radio, MP3 player, Bluetooth, USB and AUX connections, Miracast, MirrorLink, and a rear-view camera.
The SRX version, which is the best-selling, also features new 18-inch alloy wheels, the same ones used on the automaker's SUV, the SW4 Diamond, and a standard tonneau cover.
The model is still equipped with seats upholstered in scented leather, dark-toned interior trim, and an instrument panel with white lighting. It also features LED daytime running lights, an electrochromic rearview mirror, and glossy black interior details.
In the case of the SRV version, there are chrome exterior door handles and 18-inch alloy wheels as standard, a spare tire with an alloy wheel, keyless entry, push-button start, electronic hill start assist, electrochromic rearview mirror, and daytime running lights.
Visual changes impact dimensions.
Since last year, the model has had a new look, inspired by Toyota's new global design language, which has been applied to other models, such as the... Corolla, for example.
The front grille has been redesigned and features a hexagonal shape with three horizontal bars and a chrome frame.
The bumper has also been redesigned, and with that, the fog lights have gained a more vertical position. Another new feature is the pearl white color, but it is only available for the top-of-the-line SRX version.
At first glance, the 2020 Hilux appears to be much larger than it actually is. In fact, it has only grown by 7 centimeters and remains smaller than its competitor, the Chevrolet S10 double cab.
This impression of grandeur comes from the new front, whose grille is quite prominent.
The side steps are very useful in everyday life. At the rear, the horizontal taillights are large and well-defined. The reversing camera is installed in the cargo bed, and the tailgate has a central chrome handle.
The interior of the 2020 Hilux stands out with its blue-illuminated instrument cluster and easy-to-read analog gauges. Another noteworthy feature is the comprehensive onboard computer.
Due to these visual and aesthetic changes, the model underwent some dimensional alterations. The total length is 5.31 meters, with a height of 1.81 meters and a width of 1.85 meters. However, the wheelbase remained unchanged at 3.08 meters.
Motorization
The 2020 Toyota Hilux has two engine options. The entry-level engine is the same as the previous generation, a 2.7 Dual VVT-i Flex with 163 horsepower when fueled with ethanol and 159 horsepower with gasoline. The other engine option is the new 2.8 1GD diesel with 177 horsepower.
Both engine options can be equipped with either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission.

The 2020 Hilux has a total of 12 different configurations. With the 2.7 Flex engine, the drive can be 4x2 or 4x4 with manual or automatic transmission. With the 2.8 diesel engine, the drive will always be 4x4 with options for manual or automatic transmission.
Handling and behavior
The 2020 Hilux features a more rigid 20% chassis and a more rigid 40% body, as well as changes to the suspension geometry, mainly at the rear.
Both engines run smoothly and perform well at low revs. The new transmission ensures good throttle response. In normal use, everything works perfectly without surprises or jerks when shifting gears.
The handling is typical of a pickup truck, but it has improved significantly compared to the previous model. The steering is light and responds well to sudden changes in direction; the brakes, although they could be better, do the job.
Stability is a point that deserves attention and is not solely due to safety features. The suspension system is well-tuned. The rear end bounces less when empty, which promotes greater comfort and stability.
Off-road, the 2020 Hilux knows how to take advantage of its good approach and departure angles, which help in traversing ditches and other obstacles along the way. The traction control manages rear-end slippage through light braking.
In the Flex version, acceleration is average, and when cruising at 110 km/h, the engine only runs at 2,000 rpm, ensuring minimal noise in the cabin.
