Everything about the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace

The new Volkswagen Tiguan has arrived in Brazil to replace the previous generation, which was revealed to the world back in 2006 at the Los Angeles Auto Show as a concept car. What few people know is that the name Tiguan comes from the combination of the words Tiger and Iguana in English, and the name was chosen after winning a contest held by the German magazine Auto Bild.

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace
  • Category: SUV;
  • Average new price: R$ 150 thousand;
  • Average used price: R$ 90 thousand;
  • Recommended version: R-Line 350 TSI;
  • Average city fuel consumption: 7 km/L;
  • Average fuel consumption on the highway: 10 km/L.

From the launch it became clear to the German automaker that the model would have a long life.

The SUV's design remained the same until 2011, a period that revealed excellent sales figures, not only in Brazil, but also in different markets such as Europe, the USA, China, and Australia.

After this initial period came the first restyling, shown to the world in July 2011.

In this update, the Tiguan Allspace gained new headlights and taillights, a different grille, and a more powerful mechanical setup.

After that period, the Tiguan Allspace remained the same until 2016, when the second complete redesign arrived, bringing the second generation of the model to life.

It had already been shown in 2015 at the famous Frankfurt Motor Show, revealing that the model would be sold in larger, seven-seater versions, like the version that arrived here in 2020 and gave rise to the third generation of the model.

In a turbulent year like 2020, the Tiguan Allspace came in third place in sales within its category, with 8,301 units sold.

Today our experts will bring you everything this four-wheeled giant has to offer. Shall we begin?

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace: What's new

2020 ended and with it no further in-depth news about the model emerged.

This is due to VW's waiting period regarding the future of the SUV, which should actually follow the European model in terms of design and engine options.

Among the new features are the design, the embedded technology, and the mechanical aspects.

When discussing the mechanical aspects, it's important to note that not all of them will reach the Brazilian market. The main new feature is the eHybrid version, a plug-in hybrid with 425 horsepower and a range of over 500 km.

Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace: Unique and differentiated design

The Tiguan Allspace has a unique identity that draws attention wherever it goes due to its size, robustness, and aesthetic details.

Exterior

The SUV's design clearly displays a Volkswagen vehicle identity with strong, striking lines.

The initial impression is of a robust vehicle designed to carry larger families, a fact confirmed by the size change compared to the previous generation.

Regarding the model's design, the chrome trim and the large air intake at the front stand out. Although it is clearly a vehicle with German DNA, the versions have some individual particularities.

On the side, a strong line draws attention, running the entire length of the car near the height of the door handles.

The lower part of the doors features a more discreet trim and a larger section in black plastic. Trims can also be seen on the window frames.

The wheels gained more prominence, and can be 17, 18, or 19 inches.

At the rear, the trapezoidal taillights extend onto the trunk lid in a rather stylish way, with a shape that matches the exhaust outlets.

It's worth highlighting that the front and rear lights are LEDs on all versions.

Interior

The interior of the Tiguan Allspace features a sober and cohesive look, with little sportiness, but with high-quality materials and a perfect fit.

Another important point is the abundance of storage compartments in this model. The passenger space is also a positive highlight.

The rear seat modules can be viewed in a special way. All rear seats can be folded down individually.

In addition, the second row has adjustable backrest tilt and can be moved up to 180 mm forward and backward, increasing legroom.

Interior
The interior is an attraction in itself.

In addition to the rear seats, the front passenger seat can also be fully folded down, allowing the vehicle to transport objects up to 2.75 meters long, considering the distance from the trunk lid to the dashboard.

After this exterior and interior presentation, it's time to check out everything the SUV has to offer in terms of technology, connectivity, safety, engine, and fuel consumption. Shall we?

Technology, connectivity and comfort

The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is amazing in terms of space and comfort.

The SUV offers seating for up to 7 people to accommodate the whole family. Furthermore, the second and third row seats fold down individually, allowing for various configurations to improve passenger and luggage space.

Easy Open System

The Easy Open system is a lifesaver. With it, the trunk lid can be opened using a sensor located under the rear bumper.

To open it, simply pass your foot under the bumper and the trunk will open automatically.

Easy
The Easy Open system is extremely functional.

To close it, simply move away from the vehicle; that's enough for the trunk to close automatically.

If the driver prefers, simply press the closing button located on the luggage compartment lid. Simple and functional.

Active Info display

The Active Info Display system is able to adapt to the driver.

The technology replaces the analog instrument panel with a high-resolution 10.25-inch digital screen that displays 2D and 3D graphics.

Through this technological system you can customize the instrument panel with the most important and interesting information for your driving, including navigation system maps.

Climatronic

All versions of the Tiguan Allspace come standard with 3-zone Climatronic air conditioning.

The system allows the selection of a specific temperature for the driver, one for the front passenger, and another for the rear seat passengers, with independent controls on the center console.

This allows for more comfort and convenience for everyone on board.

We Connect to Go

Here we have a new feature that is being fitted to most of the German automaker's cars. It's called We Connect Go technology.

It provides a range of vehicle information via Bluetooth through a device connected to the "OBD2" port to your smartphone using the app.

Through it, it is possible to access data such as the vehicle's total mileage, range, average speed, distance traveled, and cost to travel a certain distance.

We Connect
The We Connect to Go system is the pinnacle of technology.

In addition, it is possible to display the vehicle's location on a map and data from the dealership network along the routes.

Cognitive manual

Through the My Volkswagen app (available for iOS and Android), you can interact with a virtual assistant fully based on artificial intelligence and get answers to your main questions about the 2021 Virtus.

Communication can be done via voice commands or text, in natural language, as if you were conversing with another person.

Did a warning light come on on the dashboard? The assistant is able to recognize the image of the warning light and provide a quick response.

Multimedia Center

The VW Tiguan All Space multimedia system features an HD touchscreen, is scratch-resistant, and has only virtual buttons.

With many features, the main ones that can be listed are internet connection via smartphone for the driver, allowing the user to download various types of applications directly to the system from the VW Play apps virtual store.

Kessy and Go System

Volkswagen has combined technology and practicality to bring the electronic ignition key to Tiguan Allspace owners.

The Kessy System unlocks the vehicle by simply bringing the key close and starts the engine with the touch of a button. It's a lot of technology working in favor of comfort and convenience.

Multifunctional steering wheel

And to conclude our topic on technology and connectivity, we have the multifunction steering wheel.

It features onboard computer controls and an infotainment system, and can be operated by voice command.

Through it, it is also possible to select different media types (CD, SIM card, Bluetooth, auxiliary input and USB), operate the phone and the entire navigation system.

Champion security

Another point that draws attention to the Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is its safety features.

The SUV features a range of systems and equipment designed to provide high levels of safety for the driver and occupants.

6 airbags

As you might expect, the first safety feature is the airbags.

In total, the model features two front airbags, two side airbags, and two curtain airbags that inflate in accident case, protecting the occupants inside.

Electronic stability control

Electronic stability control prevents the SUV from losing directional stability in curves or sudden changes of direction.

When it detects a loss of control situation, the system's control unit activates the engine and brakes to bring the vehicle back onto its trajectory.

Isofix system

The Tiguan Allspace comes standard in all its versions with ISOFIX® and top-tether systems for securing child restraint devices, which are the well-known car seats.

The system offers greater safety for the family and peace of mind for the driver.

Adaptive speed and distance control

Adaptive cruise control uses a radar sensor integrated into the front grille to maintain the speed selected by the driver, as well as a pre-defined distance from the vehicle ahead, braking and accelerating according to traffic.

Controle
Adaptive speed and distance control increases safety.

The system is capable of braking to a complete stop when the car in front stops, but only on the condition that the driver keeps their hands on the steering wheel and participates in driving, so that they can intervene at any time.

Dynamic high beam assistant

High beams help illuminate the road at night, but the need to switch them on and off can be a nuisance.

Therefore, the dynamic high-beam assistant automatically adjusts according to the situation when it recognizes that there are vehicles coming in the opposite direction.

Park Assist

Park Assist is a parking assistant that indicates a suitable parking space and helps the driver enter and exit the space.

The system allows for semi-automatic parking in spaces parallel or perpendicular to the road – it can even pull the car out of the space.

Furthermore, the system can even brake the car if the driver fails to do so, as a way to avoid collisions.

Pedestrian detector

Using a radar sensor and a front-facing camera – which work day or night – the pedestrian detector can help identify pedestrians crossing the path ahead.

Pedestrian monitoring uses audible and visual signals at speeds above 30 km/h to help alert drivers to pedestrians in the roadway.

At speeds below 30 km/h, the Tiguan Allspace will automatically begin braking without warning if the driver does not react to the signals emitted.

Pedestrian detectors can help prevent accidents involving pedestrians crossing the road or minimize the consequences of an accident, but they do not replace the driver's responsibility.

Rearview camera

Due to the size of the Tiguan Allspace, the rearview camera is a literal assistant for maneuvering. It allows for safe and practical maneuvering.

The image is projected directly onto the multimedia center screen in high definition, which is very helpful in many situations.

Large dimensions

The model became even larger in all dimensions and lower, which ultimately reinforces the sporty aspect of the design.

The Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace is 4.70 meters long, 1.83 meters wide, has a wheelbase of 2.79 meters, and is 1.65 meters high.

In the five-seater version, the weight is 1,562 kg, and in the seven-seater version, the SUV can reach 1,785 kg.

Tiguan espaço
The Tiguan Allspace is grand and spacious.

The trunk capacity is 710 liters in the five-seater version, 51% more than the previous generation. If the seats are folded down, this capacity increases to 1,870 liters.

In the seven-seater versions, the cargo capacity is 216 liters with all seats in use, 686 liters with the third row folded down, and 1,716 liters with all seats folded down.

Designed for asphalt, but also performs well on dirt roads.

While not abandoning its off-road appeal, which is clearly not its primary purpose or attribute, the Tiguan remains a multi-purpose vehicle.

The model features excellent approach and departure angles, as well as a ground clearance of 216 mm and a ramp angle of almost 20º.

According to the manufacturer, this can be useful in off-road situations, but also within the city.

Engine and fuel consumption

The engine and fuel consumption are other highlights of the Tiguan Allspace.

Engines

The engine lineup features two options.

The first is the 1.4 TSI Total Flex, which equips the "most basic" versions. This engine delivers 150 horsepower with both gasoline and ethanol and has a maximum torque of 25.5 kgfm.

The mechanical setup of these versions features a six-speed DSG automatic transmission, which provides acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 198 km/h.

The second engine option is only available for the top-of-the-line version.

Motorização
There are two engine options.

This is the 2.0 TSI engine from the third generation of the EA 8888 family, with 1,984 cm³, 220 horsepower, and a maximum torque of 35.7 kgfm. It runs only on gasoline.

With direct fuel injection, but also with multipoint injection in the intake manifold, the engine delivers great power when needed, but at the same time is economical in normal situations.

The vehicle utilizes a seven-speed DSG transmission and 4MOTION all-wheel drive, resulting in excellent performance. It accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7 seconds and has a top speed of 223 km/h.

Consumption

In the city, equipped with the 1.4 engine, the Tiguan Allspace gets 6.8 km/L with ethanol and 10.1 km/L with gasoline. The 2.0 engine averages 8.3 km/L.

On the highway, the 1.4 engine achieves average fuel consumption of 8.0 km/L with ethanol and 11.7 km/L with gasoline. The 2.0 engine averages 9.6 km/L.
