Volkswagen T-Cross 2020

The Volkswagen T-Cross was considered by experts to be the launch of the year in 2019. And as with any launch, there have been a series of analyses and repercussions in this almost one year of its life; there is still much that people don't know about the SUV from the German automaker.

The history of the Volkswagen T-Cross

The Volkswagen T-Cross emerged from an internal desire within the German automaker: to launch a vehicle that would be the anti-EcoSport, and when this desire surfaced, the model that is now synonymous with success hadn't even been designed yet. 

Volkswagen's initial plan was actually to launch another model, named Taigun, which never came to fruition. The automaker's intention was actually to produce a world-class concept car. The Taigun made history at the 2012 São Paulo Auto Show, when the prototype was revealed. 

In 2012, the Brazilian automotive industry was considered one of the world's biggest bets, experiencing significant growth and attracting new brands that began announcing the construction of new factories in the country. Furthermore, companies already knew that the compact SUV segment would be one of the main ones here in the coming years, and the Taigun seemed like the perfect plan to get ahead of the competition. 

However, as many know, predictions about the growth of the Brazilian market did not materialize. The only accurate prediction was regarding the dominance of SUVs, but with this lower-than-expected growth, the Taigum never got off the ground, neither in Brazil nor anywhere else in the world. 

Upon analyzing the initial project, it's likely the model wouldn't have had the resources to compete with its much larger rivals that arrived from mid-2015 onwards (such as the Kicks, the Creta, and even the HRV-V). The model was designed based on the Up! platform and would have been considered a smaller crossover, meaning the chances of failure were high. 

As the years passed, Volkswagen's research and development team ended up developing the T-Cross, which didn't come out ahead of the competition, but let's face it, so far the SUV is doing well.
