10 cringe vehicles
When it comes to unnecessary and unusual cars, the list of vehicles produced It's extremely long here.
So, our experts had to work hard to organize the 10 cringe vehicles that really made their mark here and bring shame to the automakers.

10. Mercedes Benz X-Class
And to start things off right, let's begin with the Mercedes-Benz X-Class! This is without a doubt one of the most cringe-worthy vehicles ever released.
In 2017, Mercedes made a big fuss about what would be the biggest launch of a mid-size pickup truck.
The X-Class was a partnership between Daimler and the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, from which the famous Renault Alaskan and the new generation of the Nissan Frontier emerged.
The X-Class was a complete mistake!
It did not offer the comfort and minimum level of refinement expected from a Mercedes vehicle.
The problem also stemmed from the lack of robustness that the pickup truck possessed.
The promised production for Córdoba in Argentina never materialized, and the pickup truck was produced only in Spain for three years.
Only 8,000 pickup trucks from the German brand left the factory in Barcelona, out of a total of 38,000 that had been promised.
In other words, a complete example of cringe vehicles.
9. Peugeot Hoggar
In 2009, the French automaker decided to enter the highly competitive and complicated segment of compact pickup trucks.
It's important to remember that even Ford couldn't succeed in this segment. Peugeot then created one of the most cringe-worthy vehicles to try their luck!
We're talking about the Peugeot Hoggar, which used the 207's architecture with a platform adaptation of the old 206, sharing the same mechanical components.
It goes without saying that it would be a sales flop, doesn't it?
And to complete the farce, they even launched an adventure version – the Escapade, with a bumper featuring a strange frame that looked more like a vampire's teeth.
Of course, at the time, the Fiat Strada and VW Saveiro continued to dominate the market.
8. Chevrolet Montana Combo
The Montana had a few glory days before its restyling at the end of 2010.
It was from then on that the Montana began to appear on the list of cringe vehicles, being entirely based on the Agile, which used the platform of the first Corsa from 1994, while the first generation of the pickup truck was derived from the second generation of the hatchback.
In other words, to this day we don't know what happened at GM. Not content with making mistakes, the automaker continued to make them.
Right after the Montana With the new generation changing, Chevrolet reissued the combo version for the line that already existed in its predecessor.
It was a variant with a closed cargo bed lined with fiberglass.
This turned the pickup truck into an even more bizarre van, since it was inspired by the Agile, giving it a totally disproportionate and controversial look.
It looked more like a haunted coupe than anything else. Totally cringe!
7. Troller Pantanal
Here we have one of the most cringe-worthy vehicles in Brazilian history: the Troller Pantanal.
Have you ever imagined a car manufacturer having to buy back all the models of a vehicle it produced and having to destroy them? Well, that's what Ford did with the pickup trucks derived from the Troller T4, after acquiring the manufacturer in 2007.
Pantanal's production line had already been shut down due to low sales.
However, Ford detected problems considered irreversible in the pickup truck's structure that affected its maneuverability and posed a risk of accidents.
The company then decided to recall all copies sold up to that point and reimburse the owners.
The good news in all of this is that Troller's sales expectation of selling 1,000 units at launch did not materialize.
Only 77 units were sold during the pickup truck's short one-year lifespan.
6. Hyundai Veloster
Here we have, without a doubt, one of the most cringe-worthy vehicles.
In 2011, the Caoa group conducted intensive marketing for the launch of the Hyundai Veloster.
The advertising campaign emphasized the coupe's sporty look, the fact that it only had three doors, and promised excellent performance with a 140-horsepower engine.
The shameful part of this case lies in the promised mechanics that were not delivered!
The engine in the Veloster imported to Brazil was the same 1.6-liter engine from the i30 of that time, which also equipped the HB20 a year later.
This engine only produced 128 horsepower, not the promised 140.
To complete this story, a series of lawsuits ensued, and the Veloster ceased being sold in 2014.
5. Toyota Etios Cross
Toyota fans were a little surprised when the automaker launched the Etios here in 2012.
The low-cost Indian project had excellent mechanics, but its design was somewhat controversial.
Inside, the finish was extremely basic, which made everything even worse: it didn't even look like a car from that brand. But things can always get worse.
A year after the Etios debuted, Toyota wanted to innovate and decided to create an adventure version of the compact hatchback.
Thus, the automaker filled the Etios with trinkets and christened it "Cross".
This made what was already ugly even worse. The model in question was ridiculed for years until it was discontinued in 2018.
Another one of those cringe vehicles.
4. Fiat Linea
In 2007, Fiat tried to show Brazil (and the world) that it still knew how to make cars that were more sophisticated than the Uno and the Palio.
So, he decided to launch Linea!
A visually appealing sedan, with meticulous finishing, good build quality, and an excellent service package.
A great idea, isn't it? But the vehicle ended up being a total cringe.
That's because Fiat truly believed that the model could compete on equal footing with the pair of mid-size sedans that still dominate the segment today: the Civic and the Corolla.
The model still had to compete with the Chevrolet Vectra, Astra Sedan, Ford Focus Sedan, Renault Megane, and many others.
However, in terms of space, the Linea was more like a compact car, meaning it could compete with the Polo Sedan and Honda Fit.
With unrealistic prices and a Dualogic transmission that was a complete headache, the Linea stalled in sales and fell far short of the success the manufacturer had hoped for.
3. Citroen AirCross
Citroën has always had a strong tradition in minivans, and this type of vehicle was very popular at the beginning of the century, let's face it.
However, an urban SUV was already showing signs of where the market was headed: the EcoSport!
In 2010, Citroën decided to launch a kind of rival to Ford, but in a minivan format.
It was the C3 Aircross. An adventure version of the C3 Picasso that had already been presented in Europe.
Although it had plenty of space, its design was controversial, which prevented it from competing with the segment's sales leader at the time.
Moreover, its 1.6 16V engine was weak for its weight, and the high fuel consumption made it even more cringe-worthy.
2. Chevrolet Chevette Jeans
This is a classic case among cringe vehicles!
In 1979, General Motors decided to launch a denim version based on the budget-friendly Chevette model.
From the outside, the compact sedan was ordinary, like all the others. But the worst part was inside the cabin.
The upholstery on the seats, dashboard, and doors was made of denim, just like jeans, and even had pockets on the sides of the seatbacks.
The idea was to attract a younger audience. So much so that the advertising was based on the following phrase:
"Chevette and Jeans: the two most laid-back, sporty, and durable things that exist."
Of course, the design was far less successful than the pants are today, and it didn't last long.
Today it is extremely rare to find a complete version of this Chevette.
1. Fiat Uno College
Just like with the Chevette Jeans, Fiat wanted to associate the image of the new Uno, which was launched in 2010, with a younger audience.
Targeting university students looking for their first car, Fiat launched the special College edition of its compact car.
The details were inspired by backpacks, with a sticker mimicking a zipper on the side, and the mirror covers, front grille rings, and door handles were painted red.
The wheels were painted white, which is rather strange, let's face it.
Inside, there were storage compartments with pockets in the backrests of the front seats. The air vent surrounds and steering wheel details were also red.
It's not absurd to say that the car looked more like a caricature than anything else. Certainly one of the most cringe-worthy vehicles ever seen around here!
