After some waiting and delays due to the pandemic, the Corolla Cross has finally arrived in Brazil and can be considered the first real competitor to the Jeep Compass. 

Its main advantages are the brand's strong image, as well as its flex-fuel hybrid technology, a true milestone in automotive technology. 

The inspiration is classic: The sedan that shares the same name! 

The SUV arrives in Brazil with a more than expressive and voluminous design, conveying an image of comfort and robustness, in addition to the obvious safety features. After all, we're talking about a Toyota! 

The SUV will be manufactured in Sorocaba, in the interior of São Paulo, which tends to make it more affordable and thus allow it to compete on equal terms with the Compass.

In terms of comfort and technology, Toyota vehicles are a special attraction, and the Corolla Cross is no exception. 

The model boasts numerous electronic gadgets and technological devices designed to ensure maximum comfort and experience for the driver and passengers. 

Our first item on the list is the Toyota Play+ Multimedia system, which features an 8-inch touchscreen. The system includes AM/FM radio, MP3, USB input, and Bluetooth connectivity. 

Furthermore, the system is capable of connecting to smartphones and tablets via the well-known and functional Android Auto and Apple CarPlay systems. It's a connection that's hard to fault. 

The Corolla Cross's onboard computer features a multifunction display and a central 7-inch TFT screen, where you can view a range of information such as fuel consumption, tire pressure, travel time, odometer, and much more. 

Furthermore, the Eco Driving system, aimed at more economical and consistent driving, can also be accessed and monitored via the on-board computer.

Here we have necessary and important systems, but they are no longer as impressive and literally eliminate the need for a key to lock and unlock the doors, as well as to start the SUV. 

Using proximity sensors, the Corolla Cross opens the doors when the keys are nearby and automatically unlocks them when they are far away. 

Using the same type of technology, the model recognizes the proximity of the key and allows the engine to be started via the familiar Start/Stop button.

As expected, the model features dual-zone digital air conditioning that allows for the distribution of hot and cold air with control over specific zones, ensuring that the driver and passenger can choose the temperatures they prefer. 

The SUV also features air vents for the rear seats, providing comfort in terms of temperature for the occupants in the back. 

And to complete the system perfectly, there is a pollen filter, which is capable of protecting the occupants, preventing or avoiding allergic reactions or discomfort in the respiratory system. 

Like what happens in the Toyota Corolla Sedan, the Corolla Cross features a progressive electric power steering system. 

When stationary or moving slowly, the steering wheel becomes light, which facilitates maneuvering and provides agility in tight spaces or at low speeds.

As speed increases, the steering wheel automatically becomes heavier, ensuring a firmer, more stable, and safer driving experience. 

And last but not least, the Corolla Cross features electric adjustments for the driver and passenger seats, aiming for maximum comfort and ergonomics. 

The driver's seat has electric adjustment for up to eight settings, including height, distance, and reach. The passenger seat has up to four adjustment options.

The first safety feature that deserves attention is airbags. Whenever someone talks about safety, they are the first thing that comes to mind. 

The Toyota Corolla Cross features a total of 7 airbags: two front airbags, two curtain airbags, two side airbags, and one knee airbag for the driver. This provides protection from all sides. 

Another safety and protection feature present in the Corolla Cross are the protective bars inside all the SUV's doors.

Another very important safety feature is the hill start assist, which keeps the vehicle stationary for a few seconds, preventing it from rolling backward and causing accidents and incidents. 

The lane-keeping assist system uses cameras and sensors to detect lane departures and bring the SUV back into its proper trajectory, ensuring maximum safety. 

In addition, the system also has a lane departure warning function, which ensures greater peace of mind when making turns. 

Cruise control is a very useful technology, also present in SUVs. 

With it, the driver can program the cruise speed according to the highway limit, ensuring safety and avoiding unnecessary fines due to inattention. 

The Corolla Cross features an automatic headlight and taillight activation system using sensors. 

When these sensors detect natural drops in lighting, the daytime running lights and the front and rear lights are turned on to ensure greater safety while driving. 

In addition, the SUV features an automatic high-beam system that recognizes an oncoming vehicle and automatically lowers the lighting to avoid dazzling the driver coming from the opposite direction. 

One of the worst feelings a driver can have is being blinded by the lights of vehicles coming from behind, but in the Corolla Cross this doesn't happen, as the rearview mirror has an anti-glare system. 

This allows the mirror to absorb all the light and not transfer it to the driver, which provides greater safety while driving. 

Because it is a large vehicle, it is natural that there are blind spots, but this issue is overcome with the blind spot warning system that alerts the driver when there is a vehicle or object that they are unable to see. 

The Tilt Down system lowers the left rearview mirror when reverse gear is engaged, assisting the driver in maneuvering. 

The front and rear parking sensors assist the driver in performing maneuvers, preventing any type of accident or incident. 

Rear cross-traffic alert is another safety technology in the Corolla Cross, preventing accidents with objects, vehicles, and even unsuspecting pedestrians.

The Corolla Cross comes with two engine options. 

The first is a 2.0 naturally aspirated flex-fuel engine with direct injection capable of producing up to 177 horsepower, along with 24.1 kgfm of torque. This option is paired with a CVT transmission simulating 10 gears, ensuring an engaging driving experience. 

The second option is the hybrid system, which features a 1.8-liter engine with 101 hp and 14.5 kgfm of torque, assisted by two electric motors that together provide an additional 122 horsepower, and can be fueled with gasoline or ethanol.

In this option, the transmission is also a CVT type, but there is no simulated gear shifting. 

Fuel consumption is a point that draws a lot of attention. In the conventional model, the Corolla Cross manages to achieve an average of 12 km/L in urban use and 15.5 km/L in highway use.

In the hybrid version, as expected, fuel consumption is better, with the SUV achieving 18.3 km/L in urban use and 16.9 km/L in highway use. 

The lower fuel consumption in urban use, in this case, is due to the batteries being powered by energy from more frequent braking, which does not occur on the highway. 

In its flex-fuel version, the Corolla Cross reaches 100 km/h in 10.5 seconds, a good average for a heavy SUV.  

In the hybrid version, the 100 km/h mark is reached slightly later, at 13.4 seconds. 

Toyota has not yet revealed the model's top speed. 

In terms of performance, the Corolla Cross boasts quick acceleration and efficient downshifting, and its fuel consumption is similar to that of a popular hatchback, which tends to please its owners, since any kind of fuel economy is more than welcome.

Another point worth noting about the Toyota Corolla Cross is its factory warranty, which covers not only convenience but also peace of mind at all times. 

Thus, the manufacturer offers two warranties to owners of the new SUV. The first is an eight-year warranty against manufacturing and assembly defects in the hybrid system.

Built on the same platform used by the Corolla sedan, the SUV offers a driving experience somewhat similar to its younger sibling.

Furthermore, it has the stability of a vehicle that is clearly more agile on the track and especially on curves. 

In urban driving, the Corolla Cross has great potential to perform well. 

In addition to being a smooth ride, it has a good turning radius of 10.4m. Due to its driving position, the driver's field of vision is wide, which greatly improves visibility. 

One point that deserves highlighting in the Corolla Cross is its fuel economy, especially in the hybrid version. 

In both urban and highway driving, the SUV proved to be quite agile, functional, and economical. 

It's understandable that someone buying a large SUV like this doesn't think much about fuel costs, but let's face it, any kind of saving is always welcome, isn't it?

Another advantage For those looking for an SUV to call their own, the Toyota Corolla Cross is a good alternative due to its price. 

The model starts at R$ 139,000 and can reach up to R$ 189,000. Are these high prices? Yes, without a doubt.

Its main competitor, the Jeep Compass, starts at R$136,000 and can reach prices of up to R$230,000. When comparing the two top-of-the-line versions, there is a difference of more than R$40,000, a rather considerable amount. 

It's important to remember that there's a new competitor arriving in Brazil this year in this category, the VW Taos. Therefore, keeping prices relatively low is an interesting strategy that should be taken into consideration. 

The SUV's interior is quite similar to that of the sedan. The Corolla Cross is indeed spacious and comfortable, and this applies to both passengers and the driver. 

This issue is further exacerbated by electronic gadgets such as multimedia systems, seat adjustments, dual-zone air conditioning with rear vents, and all the technological devices. 

One factor that might slightly affect comfort in both engine options is the engine noise, which can fill the cabin when the revs climb.

This noise that invades the cabin is typical of a vehicle with a CVT transmission, even with good sound insulation, as is the case with the Corolla Cross. 

Speaking of space, for an SUV, its trunk could be a bit bigger. The model has a trunk of only 440 liters, while its sedan sibling has 470 liters. 

Although it's "only" 30 liters, it's something that can make a difference when deciding to buy. 

One aspect of the Toyota Corolla Cross that may seem questionable, however incredible it may appear, is its finish. 

Although the parts fit together very well, there is a slight overuse of rigid plastics that are rough to the touch, which may bother more discerning users. 

It's worth noting here that the Compass has a more refined finish than the newly launched SUV.

However, the issue of finish and the materials used are largely personal matters. 

From a practical and functional standpoint, the Corolla Cross is the champion, but in terms of performance, things could be better.

The combination of the 2.0 engine and the 10-speed CVT transmission has a somewhat unharmonious driving dynamic, something that can be overcome by using the paddle shifters, but even so, the SUV feels a bit sluggish. 

In the case of the hybrid system, performance also falls short of expectations. Even with the two electric motors, the "tired" 1.8 engine shows some strain. 

In the second option, without the possibility of making manual gear changes, the driver may be stuck until the system chooses to shift up or down gears, which is not very appealing for those who like to have total control. 

One thing we can be sure of: The Toyota Corolla Cross has its niche! 

With ample space, comfort, and fuel efficiency, there's no doubt that the new Japanese SUV will be a strong contender for discerning buyers who will also have the Jeep Compass and the upcoming VW Taos to choose from. 

Something important to mention is that the SUV could even cut into its own flesh and compete with the Corolla Sedan, given the success that segment has had in Brazil. 

One point worth considering is that the Corolla Cross will not only win over buyers because of its positive features, but also because of its name.
