The 10 best cars in Formula 1 history
Before we reveal the 10 best cars in Formula 1 history, let's mention that four of them were driven by two Brazilians: our great and eternal Ayrton Senna and Rubens Barrichello. Check out which cars they are now.
10. Williams FW14B
The Williams FW14B began development in 1991, and the design served as the basis for the English team's cars until 1994.
In 1992, the year it hit the track, the FW14B had virtually no competitors, and Nigel Mansell dominated. The intelligent electronic suspension gave the car positive responses in any track situation, keeping the car level despite bumps or inclines.
Of the 16 races contested, the car won 10, a success rate of 62% in terms of victories. Mansell became champion with almost double the points of his teammate, Riccardo Patrese, who had the same equipment.
9. McLaren MP4-5
Using the MP4-4 model as a base, with specifications for that season, the McLaren MP4-5 was undoubtedly one of the best cars in Formula 1 history.
The car literally dominated the tracks in 1989, leading Prost and Senna to fight for the world title until the very last race, thus beginning one of the greatest rivalries in the category. Equipped with the 3.5L Honda V10 RA109-E engine producing around 650 horsepower, the McLaren MP4-5 won 11 of the 16 races in the championship.
8. McLaren MP4-2
The MP4-2 project was led by John Barnard and won not just one title in the category, but three, with its chassis variations, bringing the constructors' championship to Woking in 1984 and 1985, and second place in 1986.
In 1984, the year the M4-2 raced for the first time, Niki Lauda became champion, with his teammate Alain Prost finishing in second place just half a point behind. On that occasion, the team won 12 of the 16 races of the season.
7. Red Bull RB7
The Red Bull RB7 was developed by the renowned designer Adrian Newey and delivered a simply overwhelming performance in 2011, securing the drivers' title for Sebastian Vettel with four races to spare and the constructors' title with three.
The RB7 achieved 18 pole positions in 19 races, a success rate of 951 TP3T, and took 12 victories, a success rate of 631 TP3T. The engine was a Renault RS27 V8 2.4 L.
6. Williams FW18
The Williams FW18 is another Formula 1 car designed by Adrian Newey, this time with Patrick Head as a co-driver. The car debuted in 1996 and saw the team's drivers at the time, Damon Hill and Jacques Villeneuve, compete for the title almost exclusively.
Hill won 8 races and Villeneuve only 4. With this, the team totaled 12 wins in 16 races, a success rate of 75%. The FW18 was equipped with a semi-automatic gearbox coupled to a 3.0L Renault V10 engine. As is typical in the category, the team dominated that year.
5. Red Bull RB9
It may seem repetitive, but it's not. Here we have another model designed by Adrian Newey; this one was another from the Austrian team that didn't have much difficulty achieving success on the track.
Driven by Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber, the RB9 dominated the 2013 Formula 1 season, winning 13 of the 19 races, generating a success rate of just over 68%.
The engine was once again a Renault 2.4L V8 with revs limited to 18,000 RPM, a true symphony for engine enthusiasts. Furthermore, the RB9 featured a brake energy recovery system, KERS. With this car, Vettel won his fourth consecutive world championship. To date, it was the last car from the team to dominate the world championship.
4. Ferrari F-2004
With Ross Brawn as technical director and Rory Byrne as head of design, Ferrari dominated the 2004 season with ease. Featuring Brazilian Rubens Barrichello and multi-champion Michael Schumacher as drivers, the F-2004 won 15 of the 18 races that season, achieving a success rate of 83%.
As expected, the F-2004 was equipped with a powerful Ferrari V10 engine with over 900 horsepower. The combined weight of the car and driver was only 605 kilograms. The Maranello team had no worthy competitors that year.
3. Mercedes W05 Hybrid
The Mercedes W05 Hybrid was driven by Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in 2014, the first year of the hybrid era in Formula 1. The model was equipped with a Mercedes 1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine with direct injection capable of generating 730 horsepower, in addition to electric motors for thermal and kinetic energy recovery that provided an extra 161 horsepower.
In the 2014 season, no other car was as consistent as this silver arrow, which won a total of 17 out of 19 races, in addition to scoring 18 pole positions.
2. Ferrari F-2002
In second place on our list is the Ferrari F-2002, another project from the partnership of Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne, which was a true nightmare for the competition in the 2002 season. Also driven by Schumacher and Barrichello, the car was equipped with a 3.0-liter naturally aspirated Ferrari V10 engine, installed at a 90º angle.
In the hands of the two drivers, the Ferrari F-2002 achieved 15 victories in the 17 races of that season, a success rate of 88%. The model was so efficient that the team used a B variant in the first races of 2003 while the new car was being prepared.
1. McLaren MP4-4
And leading our list of the best cars in Formula 1 history is the McLaren MP4-4, the car that gave our idol Ayrton Senna his first title.
The MP4-4 is considered a true masterpiece, built by Steve Nichols and Gordon Murray, and it couldn't possibly be at the top of our list. After all, even after so many years, it still holds the records for pole positions and wins in a single season in the category.
The McLaren MP4 achieved 15 victories in 16 races, giving it a success rate of 93.75%. The success rate for pole positions was the same. Furthermore, out of a possible 240 points, the team scored 199, resulting in 82.92% of the available points. To definitively confirm the model's dominance, out of the 1031 laps in the 1988 season, the car led 1003, or 97.28%.
In addition to the extreme skill, talent, and daring of Senna and Prost, the MP4-4 featured a chassis with a lower center of gravity, which generated more downforce, meaning it literally glued the car to the ground in corners and gave it more speed on straightaways.
Beneath the fairing, the MP4 boasted a nearly 1500cc twin-turbo Honda V6 engine with a power output close to 700 horsepower. A package that no driver could fault.
The greatest champions in Formula 1 history.
It's no use for engineers and designers to develop fast cars if there aren't drivers capable of pushing these machines to their limits and winning titles. With that in mind, we've also compiled a list of the 10 drivers with the most titles in the top category of world motorsport. Check out who they are.
10. Nelson Piquet
Brazilian Nelson Piquet was the first Brazilian to win three world titles. Nelsão, as he is known today, was a two-time champion with Brabham in 1981 and 1983 and once with Williams in 1987.
9. Ayrton Senna
Like Nelson Piquet, Ayrton Senna was also a three-time Formula 1 champion. Our hero won the titles in 1988, 1990, and 1991. All of Senna's titles were won during his time racing for McLaren.
8. Niki Lauda
Austrian Niki Lauda is also among the top 10 greatest champions in the category. Champion in 1975 and 1977 with Ferrari and in 1984 with McLaren, Lauda is the only driver to have been champion with both teams.
7. Jackie Stewart
Scottish driver Jackie Stewart is another three-time Formula 1 champion. He won his first championship in 1969 driving for Matra. In 1970, Stewart moved to Tyrrell, where he won two more titles in 1971 and 1973.
The driver also owned a Formula 1 team named after his surname during the 1997-1999 seasons, achieving a victory with Johnny Herbert at the 1999 European Grand Prix. The following year, the team was sold to Jaguar.
6. Jack Brabham
The Australian is the last driver in the category's three-time champion class. Brabham won the titles in 1959 and 1960 with the Cooper team. A remarkable fact about his first title was the need for the driver to push his car for the final 300 meters due to running out of fuel during the United States Grand Prix. In 1969, as both driver and team owner, Brabham won a third and iconic title.
5. Sebastian Vettel
German driver Sebastian Vettel truly had a meteoric run of titles. As a Red Bull driver, Vettel won four championships between 2010 and 2013, a rare feat in Formula 1.
4. Alain Prost
Nicknamed "the professor," the French driver is not well-regarded in Brazil due to his fierce rivalry with Ayrton Senna during their time at McLaren.
Prost won three titles with McLaren in 1985, 1986, and 1989. When his relationship with Senna became untenable, he moved to Ferrari, where he finished as runner-up in 1990. After a sabbatical in 1992, the professor returned to the category in 1993, racing for Williams, winning his fourth title, and then retiring.
3. Juan Manuel Fangio
Juan Manuel Fangio was the first five-time Formula 1 champion and for a long time the category's greatest champion. The Argentinian won the championships in 1951, 1954, 1955, 1956 and 1957.
His first title was with Alfa Romeo, the second and third were won with Maserati and Mercedes, the fourth with Ferrari, and the last again driving for Maserati. He is the only driver to be champion with four different teams; in addition, Fangio was runner-up in 1950 and 1953.
2. Lewis Hamilton
The British driver is the current champion of the category, and in the 2020 season he seeks to equal Michael Schumacher's number of titles.
The Englishman, who already holds the record for most pole positions, could also achieve the title of most successful driver in the category this year. Hamilton won his first championship with McLaren in 2008 after a fierce battle with Brazilian Felipe Massa until the very last corner.
In the years 2014, 2015, 2017, 2018 and 2019, the driver won the titles at the wheel of a Mercedes.
1. Michael Schumacher
And here we have the greatest champion in Formula 1 history. The German, like Prost, is not very well regarded by the Brazilian public for having been Rubens Barrichello's teammate during Ferrari's glory seasons in the 2000s.
Schumacher's first two titles were won with the now-defunct Benetton team, in 1994 and 1995. After a short hiatus, the German won consecutive titles from 2000 to 2004, becoming the driver with the most championships in history.
Although winning a title is an important metric, it's possible to define quality in terms of driving skill; there are extremely competent drivers who have competed in the category without accumulating titles or wins.
