What is the Fipe Table?
Fipe is the acronym for Fundação Instituto de Pesquisas Econômicas (Foundation Institute of Economic Research). This is a non-profit, privately owned organization that was created in 1973.
Thus, its objective is to support educational and research institutions, especially the Department of Economics at the Faculty of Economics, Administration and Accounting of the University of São Paulo (FEA-USP).
Among other activities, it works on the development of financial and economic indicators. In this way, it serves as a reference for public agencies and private companies.
Hence the name Fipe Table, which became known as the table that provides the average prices of vehicles sold throughout the country.
How is the calculation done?

The average price is calculated based on research conducted on prices advertised by vehicle sellers.
The value is calculated by averaging the values found, eliminating those that are too high or too low and do not reflect reality.
Therefore, the table is updated monthly and is constantly renewed with regard to vehicle characteristics, such as version and year/model.
However, vehicles sold specifically for resale, fleet operations, and government agencies are excluded from the table. Also excluded are armored and customized vehicles, or vehicles from brands not yet established in the Brazilian market.

How do I consult the Fipe Table?
Okay, so if you plan to sell your car or even buy a new or used one, you should consult the Fipe Table to have a price benchmark for making the deal.
To do this, simply access the Fipe website and select the option "Average Vehicle Price". This will give you the choice between "Cars and Small Utility Vehicles", "Trucks and Minibuses", and "Motorcycles".
The table shows the average prices of car models manufactured since 1985, trucks and minibuses since 1981, and motorcycles since 1990.
So, for brand new cars, the table shows prices for brands with basic, intermediate, and fully equipped options. When choosing one of the options, you will have the alternatives of "Regular Search" or "Search by Fipe Code".

Does the Fipe Table really influence vehicle prices?

So, if you're going to buy a new or used car, or even if you're looking to sell the car you own, you need a price benchmark to start the negotiation.
Ultimately, it's your money at stake. At this point, we need to be very careful not to make a deal and regret it later. So, don't ask friends or colleagues at work for guesses about the car's value.
The best course of action in this case is to consult the Fipe Table, as its prices are based on research conducted in all regions of the country. Therefore, the Table is the primary reference for all those who sell automobiles.
Furthermore, you also use it as a basis for calculating insurance and taxes. However, you don't need to follow the table exactly; it only serves as a guideline for conducting business.
However, when making a purchase or sale, it's necessary to consider some factors that can influence the negotiation. Check them out below!
What to evaluate?
It's important to pay attention to the vehicle's condition, mileage, accessories and equipment, and even evaluate the car's color. This is because some vehicles are more sought after, which increases their value.
This allows the vehicle owner and the buyer to determine a fair value based on an initial estimate (Fipe Table) and thus reach an agreement that satisfies both parties.
Furthermore, the negotiation can be done through an intermediary, whether it's the dealership salesperson or another online agent. But be aware: this method may result in additional charges due to commissions and percentages.
In any case, even if the vehicle price increases due to commissions, the price list will always help to ensure that the negotiation is more objective and with prices that are in line with the market.
Conclusion
Great, now you know what the Fipe Table is and how to use it when buying or selling a vehicle, so we hope this information helps you with buying or selling a vehicle.
