5. Volvo XC40 T5 R-Design
The Volvo XC40 T5 R-Design has been surprisingly well-received by Brazilians, with over a thousand units registered in the first six months of 2020 – a sign that it should continue to stand out in the premium SUV market.
The XC40 T5 R-Design's hybrid system features two engines: a 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged engine capable of delivering 180 horsepower, plus a... electric motor 82 horsepower. Combined, the SUV has a powerful torque of 43.3 kgfm that can be noticed even at low revs.
Although it is 133 kg heavier than its predecessor, its performance is virtually the same, and the feeling of excess weight is not even noticeable. The model has excellent acceleration and good pick-up. The most striking difference is the absence of noise.
More attentive drivers will notice a slight change in the brakes, which can be adjusted to provide more dynamic braking, thus absorbing energy in an optimized way and recharging the battery more intensely.
Another major change is the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission with torque conversion system, which provides faster gear changes and better torque and power delivery, as well as being lighter to compensate for the model's extra weight.
That being said, let's get down to business: Consumption!
The Volvo XC40 T5 R-Design has a combined fuel consumption of 22.6 km/L in city and highway driving.
4. BMW 330e M Sport
The BMW 330e M Sport is fourth on our list of the most fuel-efficient hybrids in Brazil.
The German sedan features the same combustion engine under the hood as the 320i, a 2.0-liter engine with 184 horsepower combined with a 70-horsepower electric motor.
However, the hybrid has a rather cool secret:
A sport driving mode with a function called XtrBoost, capable of increasing power to 292 horsepower.
Something interesting about the model is that its batteries were placed close to the rear suspension, as a way to balance the weight, ensuring the model is always balanced, whether riding in straight lines or curves.
Now, let's talk about fuel consumption. The combined average fuel consumption of the BMW 330e M, in both highway and city driving, is 25.6 km/L.
3. Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid
Taking the bronze medal among the most fuel-efficient hybrids in Brazil is the Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid.
The Panamera 4 e-Hybrid has a unique formula that combines high performance with fuel consumption that would make any compact model designed for economy envious.
The model is equipped with a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V8 engine producing no less than 330 horsepower, plus an electric motor capable of generating 136 horsepower. Together, they guarantee a power output of 436 horsepower along with a torque of 71.4 kgfm.
This allows the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid to perform on the track with the same power as combustion-powered racing cars.
According to the manufacturer, the model goes from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.6 seconds and reaches a top speed of 278 km/h. All this with a paltry fuel consumption. According to Porsche, the combined average of the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid is 28 km/L. Surreal, don't you think?
2. Volvo XC60 T8 Inscription
In second place among the most fuel-efficient hybrids in Brazil is the famous Volvo XC60 T8 Inscription, which, like the previous models, also has two engine combinations: one combustion and one electric.
The combustion engine is a 2.0-liter unit from the brand's famous and well-known T5 family, powered by gasoline, with a turbocharger, direct fuel injection, double overhead camshaft, four cylinders, and aluminum components.
This unit is capable of developing 254 horsepower and is powered by an 8-speed automatic transmission with an AWD four-wheel drive system.
The electric motor in the XC60 T8 Inscription has 155 horsepower, meaning that when combined, both deliver 407 horsepower.
The engine can act as a power generator to recharge the batteries, which can also be powered by a 220-volt outlet and a 16-amp charger, with a recharge time of just three hours.
To encourage the purchase of the model, Volvo partnered with the Pão de Açúcar Group and the Iguatemi shopping mall network throughout Brazil to install 250 charging points across the country.
The brand will also offer chargers that customers can install in their homes. According to the manufacturer, the combined fuel consumption is 34.5 km/L.
1. Golf GTE
When we talk about a Golf with more than 200 horsepower, what do you immediately think of? A GTI, right? In this case, we're talking about our champion among the most fuel-efficient hybrids in Brazil: The Golf GTE.
The first Volkswagen hybrid to arrive in Brazil, the Golf GTE features a 1.4 TSI 150-horsepower gasoline engine and an additional 102-horsepower electric motor paired with an 8.8 kWh battery.
Just for the sake of curiosity, it's even possible to drive in electric mode only for up to 50 kilometers.
The model operates entirely with a triple clutch. One clutch is coupled to the electric motor and two are directly connected to the combustion engine.
It weighs a total of 1,542 kg, with 120 kg being just the battery, and reaches 100 km/h in just over seven seconds.
The Golf GTE has different driving modes. They are:
E-Mode, Hybrid Auto, Battery Hold, Battery Charge, and GTE (which is the most radical).
The first mode uses only electricity from the battery pack. When this mode is selected, the only noise you hear is the tires rubbing against the asphalt. In this mode, it's possible to reach speeds of up to 130 km/h.
When Hybrid Auto mode is selected, the two engines work together and alternate according to the driving situation. The transition from the combustion engine to the electric motor is virtually imperceptible, and the performance is pleasing due to the smoothness of the responses, as well as its efficiency.
The Battery Hold driving mode maintains the battery's charge level, while the Battery Charge mode uses the combustion engine for recharging during travel.
Finally, the GTE mode is literally the icing on the cake, transforming the hybrid into a... true sportsman capable of pleasing purists who love speed.
According to Volkswagen data, the model's average combined fuel consumption is up to 41 km/L.
