5. Chevrolet Onix LTZ 1.0 MT
The Chevrolet Onix LTZ 1.0 has a three-cylinder turbocharged Flex engine, and one thing we can tell you: It drives well and is fuel-efficient, thanks also to its six-speed transmission.
Although it doesn't have direct injection, the engine's responses are quick and precise, and there's an interesting fact: the engine delivers 116 horsepower on both ethanol and gasoline; however, when fueled with ethanol, it's possible to feel a slightly stronger torque.
The engine, named Ecotec, has smooth operation and good response at low revs, circulating comfortably between 1,500 and 1,000 rpm without struggling. The torque is excellent, but the limiter cuts it at 6,000 rpm; however, until then, the turbo is spooled up and responds promptly to the accelerator, making the driver feel comfortable in all gears.
In acceleration, even with a non-sport transmission, the Onix LTZ doesn't fall short compared to cars with engines larger than the infamous 1.0. The gear changes are smooth and functional, and you'll rarely need to "engage" a gear. Jerks are practically nonexistent.
In everyday driving, the manual transmission is more than sufficient, as is its very smooth clutch. As mentioned, the model has six gears, with the sixth gear recommended for maintaining high revs on the highway, which can lead to fuel economy.
And speaking of fuel economy, this car, one of the most fuel-efficient hatchbacks in Brazil, boasts a combined average of 13.9 km/L.
4. Fiat Argo Drive 1.0
The Argo Drive 1.0 features the powerful Firefly 1.0 6V Flex engine under the hood, a three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine capable of generating 72 horsepower with gasoline and 77 with ethanol, and it is this engine that makes the model one of the most fuel-efficient hatchbacks in Brazil.
The engine is surprisingly powerful because of its torque. Its strength even appears around 2,500 rpm, meaning you don't need to rev the engine to get good torque.
All these features make the Argo Drive 1.0 a smart car that handles both traffic and the open road without major difficulties.
However, it needs a close relationship with the clutch, especially before tackling a hill or if you need to stop on a steeper incline.
Fiat's manual gearbox still leaves something to be desired, as it remains imprecise and has a long throw – far from being an example – and, to make matters worse, it uses the same gearing for different engines and models, which ends up harming the efficiency and torque delivery of each one.
When fully loaded, with passengers or with a full trunk, some limitations may arise.
On the road, the Argo 1.0 behaves like any car of this power. Overtaking requires large margins and caution, because even with downshifts, the car can take a little too long to complete the maneuver.
The combined fuel consumption of the Argo 1.0 is positive, at around 14.1 km/L.
3. Fiat Argo Drive 1.3
The bronze medal goes to the Fiat Argo 1.3, one of the most fuel-efficient hatchbacks in Brazil. As mentioned, the engine is a modern 1.3-liter four-cylinder capable of reaching 109 horsepower when fueled with ethanol.
Its performance is surprising, offering responsive handling with good torque from low rev ranges. Although top speed isn't this version's strong point, the design stands out for its power, which in practice translates into good handling and low fuel consumption.
Performance in the city is very good, making it a good option for tackling hills without major difficulties. On the highway, overtaking is done without the need for significant downshifting, since, due to the torque, it is relatively easy to maintain high speeds consistently.
And finally, we have the combined fuel consumption with an average of 14.6 km/L.
2. Renault Kwid Zen
In second place among the most fuel-efficient hatchbacks in Brazil is the Renault Kwid Zen, which has a 1.0 SCe Flex three-cylinder engine under its hood. It's the same engine used in larger models like the Logan and Sandero, but with some modifications to simplify its operation and consequently reduce its manufacturing costs.
The Kwid's engine lost its dual variable valve timing system, as well as the exhaust manifold integrated into the cylinder head. These changes make production cheaper and reduce the overall weight, although torque and power have also decreased.
When fueled with ethanol, the engine reaches 70 horsepower. With gasoline, the horsepower is 66.
With a six-speed transmission and "reduced" torque and power, the Kwid Zen doesn't perform badly; after all, the model is lightweight, weighing only 779 kilograms, which increases its power-to-weight ratio.
Overall, the Kwid Zen has performance worthy of a not-so-modern 1.0 car, and driving it reveals that it was designed with city driving in mind, not highway driving.
Because it is very lightweight, it does not handle well at high speeds, especially on highways, which can give its occupants a feeling of insecurity.
In terms of fuel consumption, the Kwid Zen delivers good figures, with a combined average of 14.7 km/L.
1. HB20 evolution 1.0 MT
And at the top of the podium for the most fuel-efficient hatchbacks in Brazil is the HB20 Evolution 1.0 with manual transmission.
The main novelty of the model, as expected, is the 1.0 turbo engine from the GDI family with direct fuel injection, three cylinders, turbocharger and intercooler with 120 horsepower and 17.5 kgfm of torque, whether running on gasoline or ethanol.
The five-speed manual transmission provides precise and functional gear changes. The model handles the challenges of city driving with ease and performs well on highways, maintaining speed easily.
It's only when overtaking that the model needs a little more space with heavier downshifts.
Because it has a three-cylinder engine, its performance is similar to that of the Onix. However, its combined fuel consumption of 15 km/L puts it at the top of our list of the most fuel-efficient hatchbacks.
