Ford Ka 2021: Main new features
Only the most observant eyes were able to spot any aesthetic updates to the model last year. As for 2021, from an aesthetic point of view, unfortunately, they don't exist.
When we talk about the new features of the 2021 Ka, there are only a few changes in the range of versions. The Hatch Titanium version has been discontinued because, according to the brand, it didn't have good sales figures. Which, let's face it, is a shame.
While the model doesn't offer any visual updates, its structure does include new features. The 2021 Ford Ka has structural reinforcements to improve safety, with the inclusion of high-strength steel in various parts of the structure.
Reinforcements were added to the roof and pillars. According to the manufacturer, these specific changes result in a 5.3% increase in rigidity. hatchback versions and 9.2% in sedans.

Motorization
Here we have some changes. One of the main alterations is in the model's engine. The compact car has abandoned the 1.5 Ti-VCT Flex 4-cylinder engine that delivered 110 horsepower.
The engine is now the same as the entry-level EcoSport. A 1.5 Dragon Flex three-cylinder engine that is more modern, has more power and more efficient torque.
This new power unit features an aluminum block with dual overhead camshafts and an oil-immersed timing belt. When fueled with gasoline, it produces 128 horsepower. With ethanol, the engine reaches 136 horsepower.
This represents a very significant difference compared to the 2020 models. Another new feature is the six-speed automatic transmission with torque converter and the new five-speed manual transmission with synchronized reverse.
The entry-level versions of the 2021 Ford Ka remain unchanged from last year.
The entry-level models feature a 1.0 Ti-VCT Flex 3-cylinder engine under the hood, producing 80 horsepower on gasoline and 85 horsepower on ethanol, with a single option of a five-speed manual transmission.
Visual impressions
When you get into the basic versions of the 2021 Ka, the impression is that you're in a 2019 model of the third generation.
That's because, unlike the EcoSport, this vehicle only received subtle changes. The highlight is the new center console, which now features a floating screen with a touchscreen system and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities.
The Titanium Sedan version is undoubtedly the most attractive. This is especially true aesthetically, as it features horizontal chrome trim on the grille and other shiny details on the front without being overly flashy.
And for those who like the Ka and still want something different, the FreeStyle version might be the solution. The adventurous model is interesting and fun at the same time, especially in terms of aesthetics and comfort.
With its raised suspension and changes to the driving profile, it can bring a bit more stability and fun on rough terrain, as is the case with... dirt roads.
Handling and performance
The entry-level versions with the 1.0 engine prove to be good and responsive, and as expected, they have acceleration performance equal to that of the 2020 models.
However, due to structural reinforcements, the 2021 Ka is more composed and consequently more stable on curves. The difference is striking when driving on simple two-lane highways.
The 1.0 models can reach 100 km/h in about 10.7 seconds and achieve a top speed of 180 km/h.
The handling of the models with the 1.5 engine is very good, and right from the start the new engine shows what it's capable of.
The engine has a quick throttle response. The automatic transmission performs precise and smooth gear changes.
With a 1.5 engine and manual transmission, the 2021 Ford Ka reaches 100 km/h in 9.9 seconds. With the automatic transmission, the time increases to 10.7 seconds. Both transmissions have a top speed limiter of 181 km/h.
With good tuning, the system allows for acceleration up to higher RPM ranges, ensuring safety for overtaking and acceleration. This makes both the hatchback and sedan versions more agile.
Consumption
Fuel consumption is relatively good and is average among domestically produced hatchbacks.
Ford Ka with 1.0 engine and manual transmission:
- City fuel consumption: 9.2 km/l with ethanol and 13.4 km/l with gasoline;
- Fuel consumption on the highway – 10.7 km/l with ethanol and 15.5 km/l with gasoline. Gasoline.
Ford Ka with 1.5 engine and manual transmission:
- City fuel consumption: 8.4 km/l with ethanol and 12.9 km/l with gasoline;
- Highway fuel consumption: 10.3 km/l with ethanol and 14.8 km/l with gasoline.
Ford Ka with 1.5 engine and automatic transmission:
- City fuel consumption: 7.8 km/l with ethanol and 10.1 km/l with gasoline;
- Highway fuel consumption: 10.1 km/l with ethanol and 14.2 km/l with gasoline.
Equipment and safety
All versions of the compact car have two front airbags for the driver and passenger. In addition, the Ka features electric power steering and ABS brakes with EBD, which is more than required by Brazilian vehicle safety laws.
As versions evolve, the range of equipment becomes larger.
In the top-of-the-line FreeStyle version, the hatchback gains two additional airbags, electronic stability and traction control, and a rearview camera. This ensures greater safety and comfort for the owner and passengers.
Versions and prices
The 2021 Ford Ka is available in the following versions and prices:
- Ka S 1.0 MT: R$ 49.890;
- Ka SE 1.0 MT: R$ 50.740;
- Ka SE Plus 1.0: R$ 54,490;
- Ka SE Plus 1.5 R$ 60.390;
- Ka SE Plus 1.5 R$ 65.290;
- Ka FreeStyle 1.0 R$ 60,590;
- Ka FreeStyle 1.5 R$ 68,490.
Conclusion
Although it is Ford's best-selling car, the Ka has many other competitors and suffers fierce internal competition.
That's because the New Fiesta has very attractive prices that could end up enticing consumers who are thinking about buying a fully equipped Ka.
If we analyze it in terms of cost-benefit, it's much better to opt for buying an entry-level New Fiesta than a top-of-the-line Ka. Even with changes to the engine and structure.
The Ford Ka is a very cool and well-known car. But it has been losing ground to the competition. If the manufacturer doesn't implement any more profound changes, the hatchback could be increasingly overtaken by its rivals.
