If you want to know the latest news about this pickup truck, whether it will continue to dominate the market, and if it's worth buying one, be sure to read the following article; it's much more than just informative.

The history of the Fiat Toro

Since the mid-2000s, Fiat had plans to make a pickup truck larger than the Strada. During that period, partnerships were attempted with automakers such as Mitsubishi and Tata, but none were successful, until the merger with Chrysler in 2009 made the deal possible.

Dodge, a brand within the group, had the Dakota pickup truck which could serve as the basis for the project; however, research from the Italian automaker's strategic planning department indicated that there was a gap in the market to be filled with a mid-size pickup truck, larger than compact models like the Strada, and smaller than mid-size models like the Chevrolet S10, for example. This is where the idea of creating a pickup truck within a brand-new concept was born.

With a clear direction to work towards, Fiat began studies to determine what this model should be like, to meet the desires (and needs) of consumers. This research resulted in a document describing the characteristics that the "car" should have.

The main desires of consumers were: A robust vehicle with high cargo capacity, that was comfortable, handled like a car, and had different engine and transmission options.

With the concepts well defined, the production idea began to take shape, but there was still much work to be done. Fiat Brazil needed approval and a financial injection from its parent company, considering that the cost to develop a model from scratch is around R$ 1 billion, and approval is usually thoroughly studied and somewhat time-consuming.

In the case of the Fiat Toro, the mission was even more complicated, since the pickup truck was intended to fill a... segment still nonexistent.

Sources within the automaker claim that the project was stalled for a long time because the CEO of FCA – Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, Sergio Marchionne, requested additional information about the segment – which at the time did not exist – for the pickup truck. Much discussion, explanations, and arguments were necessary to obtain approval and, consequently, the green light for production of the model.
