Generations
The first generation of the Volkswagen Golf, known as the Golf MK1, was the epitome of the 1970s. Volkswagen managed to surprise the market with a new car after the Beetle, leaving competitors like the Morris Mini, Honda N360, and Fiat 128 behind, due to their limited success in the United States. From the beginning, the model possessed its own unique character, with bodywork and design details that only those who were born then will remember.
After the Volkswagen Golf MK1 achieved great success in the European market, the second generation of the Golf arrived in 1984, 10 years after the launch of the first version. Featuring Bosch K-Jetronic (CIS) electronic fuel injection, the first GTi soon appeared, producing 129 hp in the North American version and 139 hp in the European version with a 1.8 16v engine. This version was produced until 1993.
The third generation emerged even before the second was discontinued; in 1991 the Golf MK3 was already in production, and it was launched in 1992. Brazilian markets sold the GL (1.8) and GLX (2.0) models, as well as the VR6 2.8 and GTi (2.0 8v with cross-flow intake). Meanwhile, in Europe, an additional Golf model was sold: the GTi 2.0. With the third generation Golf, it was already possible to imagine the evolution of cars occurring with this model.
The fourth generation of the Golf underwent tremendous mechanical changes, giving the Golf a different stance. Dubbed the Golf MK4, the car had engine modifications in almost all its versions. It was sold in Brazil as the Golf TotalFlex 1.6, and the GTi 1.8 version ceased production and sales in Brazil. There were many changes in the 4th generation Golf, changes that are part of the evolution of cars. Production of the Golf MK4 lasted until 2006.
The fifth version of the Volkswagen Golf was launched in Europe in 2003, well before the end of production of the fourth. It had different versions, with 1.4 FSI 90hp, 1.4 16V 80hp and 1.4 TSI 140hp and 170hp engines. This generation was not sold in Brazil and production ended in 2009.
Launched in Portugal in 2008, the sixth generation of the Volkswagen Golf began to take on the modern look we know today. With a sportier and more contemporary front, it's very attractive. A beautiful car with excellent mechanics, and anyone wishing to drive one will have to go to Europe. With the evolution of cars and the advancement of technology, Brazil still can't support so much of this.
Finally, the Golf is back on Brazilian roads. With the seventh generation, launched in 2012 and sold here since 2014, Volkswagen is releasing a generation with style and several details and improvements. The seventh generation has a spacious trunk compared to the previous ones, with 380 liters of space. The Volkswagen Golf has three versions: the Highline with a 1.4 TSI engine producing 140 hp, the Comfortline MSI with 120 hp, and the most expensive GTI 2.0 TSI with 220 hp.
