The new features and advantages of the 2021 Chevrolet Onix Plus.

The 2021 Onix Plus is part of the Onix family, which practically dominates vehicle sales in the Brazilian automotive market. Today, both are the best-selling models in their respective categories and are the most registered cars in Brazil. Together, they sold over 210,000 units in 2020 alone, and everything indicates that they will continue to dominate this year.

Contrary to what many believe, the Onix Plus is not simply a superior model to the... Hatchback versionIt is actually a successor to the Prisma, which continues to be sold alongside its previous generation in the entry-level Joy version.

Besides a new name, the 2021 Onix Plus is a completely new car and shares almost nothing with its previous generation. Boasting a more aggressive look, it received brand-new equipment and even a new generation engine.

Today we're going to show you everything the 2021 Chevrolet Onix Plus has to offer. Let's check it out in detail!

The new features of the 2021 Chevrolet Onix

Like its hatchback sibling, the Chevrolet Onix Plus received its first updates back in September 2020. The first units of the 2021 version arrived in dealerships in mid-October.

The main change was the arrival of the midnight version, which has quickly spread to other models from the manufacturer.

The Onix Plus Midnight follows the same successful formula as models like the Chevrolet Tracker, S10, and Equinox, with a darkened finish replacing the chrome parts.

In addition, the model also gained the new MyLink multimedia system with an 8-inch screen, just like the rest of the line.

In addition to the arrival of this new version, the Onix Plus lost some standard features and became more expensive, something that happened in almost all versions, following a sad and natural trend in the Brazilian automotive sector today.

Details of the 2021 Chevrolet Onix Plus

Just as the VW Virtus is directly inspired by the Jetta, the Onix Plus is blatantly inspired by its older brother: the Chevrolet Cruze!

The compact sedan's design has become quite interesting and consequently more aggressive than the previous version, and this is even more evident in the more expensive versions.

Exterior

At the front, the 2021 Chevrolet Onix Plus uses more elongated headlights with modern cutouts, as well as a more refined layout. They are connected to the new front grille, which acts as an air intake.

At the extremities, the fog lights are accompanied by LED daytime running lights in a boomerang-shaped unit. The hood, in turn, features a pleasing profusion of creases.

image

Viewed from the side, the Onix Plus has a silhouette reminiscent of a fastback, with a gently sloping roofline and a more elaborate rear third volume.

There are prominent creases in the bodywork, a high waistline, and a good amount of glass area.

Finally, the rear features horizontal taillights that extend onto the trunk lid. The bumper has a lower portion made of black plastic, but of good quality.

Interior

Moving to the interior, the Onix Plus has improved significantly compared to older versions.

Although the finish still uses a lot of plastic, the design is more refined. The dashboard features distinctive and innovative cutouts, with the floating touchscreen of the multimedia system being a highlight.

Generally, the finish varies depending on the version. The dashboard may feature a central strip in gray or caramel.

In the top-of-the-line version, the vehicle can also feature seats upholstered in synthetic leather, the same material used for the armrests on the front doors.

The Onix Plus now also offers a range of technological solutions that are quite agile and practical.

It's also worth highlighting that the 2021 Onix Plus is the only one in its category to come standard with six airbags – two front, two side, and two curtain airbags – even in the most basic version.

Dimensions

In terms of dimensions, the Onix Plus 202 has grown considerably.

The model gained 19.4 centimeters in length, 4.1 cm in width, and 7.2 centimeters in wheelbase.

Regarding height, the model lost 7 millimeters, a reduction that is practically imperceptible.

All these changes translate, primarily, into more interior space for all occupants, especially for those in the back seat.

On the other hand, the trunk has been reduced in size and can now hold 469 liters, which is 31 liters less than the previous generation.

Aside from that, the 2021 Onix Plus now features approximately 17% more high-strength steel.

Because of this, in addition to the adoption of new equipment – which we will show later – the car achieved the maximum five-star rating in the Latin NCAP safety tests.

Another point worth highlighting is the total weight.

Although larger and more robust than its predecessor, the new Onix Plus is only 25 kg heavier than its previous generation, weighing a total of 1079 kg.

For comparison purposes only, its rival, the VW Virtus, weighs 114 kg more.

Chevrolet claims that the new suspension resulted in a weight reduction of 6 kilograms. The new engine alone helped to eliminate just over 15 kg.

All these changes are the result of the new platform called GEM, which was developed by GM in partnership with the Chinese company SAIC.

In addition to the Onix Plus and the Onix HatchThis new platform is also used in the new Tracker, and will be employed in the minivan that will succeed the Spin, as well as a new compact/midsize pickup truck that will arrive in the coming years to compete with the Fiat Toro.

Color palette

The 2021 Chevrolet Onix Plus features a somewhat variable color palette. You can choose from the following colors:

  • Azul Seeker;
  • Crimson Red;
  • Satin Steel Gray;
  • Silver Switchblade;
  • Summit White;
  • Black Gold Black.

Unprecedented technology and connectivity

It's no coincidence that the 2021 Chevrolet Onix Plus is considered the most connected car in Brazil.

The model incorporates innovative solutions to provide greater freedom and reduce the use of cables.

We're going to show you EVERYTHING that's technological about this model, which is gaining more and more followers throughout Brazil.

Exclusive Wi-Fi

Nowadays, life is online, and aboard the Onix Plus, this maxim is taken seriously.

Through the dedicated Wi-Fi system, it's possible to stay connected while traveling with smartphones, tablets, or laptops.

This innovative connection system features a high-intensity signal, a range of up to 15 meters, automatic connection, and allows up to 7 devices to connect.

Easy Entry System

With the Easy Entry system, the Onix recognizes the key's approach via a proximity sensor and automatically locks and unlocks the doors. This ensures even greater convenience.

Digital air conditioning

Not too hot, not too cold: the new digital air conditioner offers more adjustment options compared to analog models, allowing you to choose the exact temperature of the airflow. It's technology providing much more comfort.

Wireless Charger

With the wireless charger, your cell phone battery will never run out again.

image

In the new Onix Plus, it's possible to charge your cell phone using an induction system, without the need for cables. The system is compatible with devices that use the Qi WPC and PMA standards (except iPhone 8 and iPhone X).

Dual USB input for the rear seats

Inside the new Onix Plus, no one runs out of battery power. Just use the dual rear USB port so that rear passengers also have access to charging and connectivity.

Chevrolet MyLink

The new generation MyLink arrived with an even more modern and intuitive home menu.

Now, it's possible to connect two cell phones via Bluetooth, chat via messages, and access playlists using voice commands.

Through the 8'' high-precision touchscreen, it is possible to check the desired destination, along with integrated navigation, and send your directions by downloading the destination.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay

As expected, the Chevrolet MyLink system is capable of connecting and pairing with smartphones running Android or iOS operating systems.

Through this pairing, it's possible to mirror apps, make calls, and even reply to messages on WhatsApp. It's simply the pinnacle of technology.

Rearview camera

When reverse gear is engaged, an image of the area behind will appear on the MyLink multimedia system screen, helping to avoid objects that may be in the way.

Easy Park System

When parking the car, the driver can rely on Easy Park: a system with sensors that identify horizontal and perpendicular parking spaces and control the steering wheel. With it, the car literally parks itself.

High levels of security

Besides being considered the most connected car in Brazil, the 2021 Chevrolet Onix Plus is also one of the safest cars in Brazil!

As many people know, the model recently achieved the highest safety rating in the Latin NCAP test, with five stars for both adults and children.

Now we'll show you everything that led the model to this achievement.

6 Airbags

Whether for everyday errands or that longer family trip, the new Onix Plus keeps all passengers on board protected with its 6 standard airbags.

In addition to the air pockets, the model features standard Isofix and Top Tether attachments, which allow for a more secure fit of car seats, making their use safer.

Blind spot alert

As many know, driving in the city is a real challenge. To help the driver, the new Onix Plus has sensors in the rear corners of the car that warn, through light signals in the rearview mirror, if there is a vehicle in the blind spot.

ABS system with EBD brake force distribution.

This feature ensures that proportional braking forces are applied to each wheel, making braking more efficient. This causes the vehicle to stop in the shortest possible distance.

Hill start assist

The uphill starting system is becoming increasingly popular and is quite useful.

While the driver moves their foot from the brake to the accelerator, the feature holds the brakes for a short period of time, preventing the car from rolling backward on inclines.

Electronic traction and stability control

Here we have another feature that promotes security (and also performance).

Electronic traction and stability control applies appropriate brake pressure to the wheels and limits engine power when necessary. All this to prevent the vehicle from skidding.

Daytime running lights

The LED daytime running lights in the headlights and taillights feature an automatic activation function via twilight sensors.

As soon as a decrease in natural light is detected, the sensors automatically turn on the lights, ensuring greater visibility and safety.

OnStar System

And to conclude the section on safety for the 2021 Chevrolet Onix Plus, we need to talk about the OnStar system.

With it, you can get help in cases of emergencies and robberies, 24-hour assistance, and other exclusive services.

image

In addition to locating the vehicle, the OnStar Call Center will assist in recovering the Onix Plus in cases of theft or robbery.

By pressing the SOS button (on the rearview mirror or app) or when the airbag and vehicle sensors are activated, you can have access to a priority assistance line in emergency situations.

Engine and fuel consumption

In terms of engine, performance, and fuel consumption, the 2021 Chevrolet Onix Plus also stands out!

Engines

The 2021 Onix Plus has two different engine options under the hood.

The first option is the 1.0-liter three-cylinder naturally aspirated engine in the entry-level version. This engine is capable of producing 82 horsepower and achieving a torque of 10.6 kgfm with ethanol.

When fueled with gasoline, the power reaches 78 horsepower with torque. For this engine option, only a six-speed manual transmission is available.

image

The second option is a 1.0 turbo engine. Also with three cylinders, this engine option delivers 116 horsepower when fueled with either ethanol or gasoline.

In terms of torque, there is a slight difference, with 16.8 kgfm with ethanol and 16.3 kgfm with gasoline.

With this engine, the transmission can be either a six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic.

Consumption

Just as its hatchback sibling is known for its excellent fuel economy, the Onix Plus also boasts good average fuel consumption figures.

The naturally aspirated engine with manual transmission achieves 14.5 km/L in the city with gasoline and 10.1 km/L with ethanol. On the highway, the averages rise to 17.7 km/L and 12.5 km/L respectively.

The turbocharged engine also delivers good fuel economy, even with the automatic transmission.

With an automatic transmission, the Onix Plus gets 12 km/L in the city with gasoline and 8.6 km/L with ethanol. On the highway, the consumption is 15 km/L and 10.9 km/L respectively.

With the manual transmission, in urban use the averages are 13.6 km/L with gasoline and 9.6 km/L with ethanol, while in highway use the averages reach 17 km/L and 12 km/L respectively.

Pros and cons of the Chevrolet Onix Plus

Discover all the pros and cons of owning an Onix Plus. Ready?

Pros: Design and beauty

The first item that usually comes up on our lists of vehicle advantages and disadvantages is aesthetics.

Ultimately, it's become commonplace here to say that a vehicle, before being good, needs to be beautiful; after all, as Brazilians are well aware, ugly cars don't sell!

And when it comes to aesthetics, let's be honest, the Onix Plus has plenty of them. Therefore, design and aesthetics are the first positive points for Brazil's best-selling compact sedan.

Pros: Connectivity

Continuing the list of pros and cons of the Onix Plus, connectivity is a major selling point.

The Onix Plus is the first car in its segment to feature onboard internet service. This means you don't need to use your mobile data plan to browse the internet while in the car, which is a positive thing.

image

However, it's not all roses. The factory-installed Wi-Fi service comes with a three-month trial period, and after that, you need to subscribe to Claro's services, whose SIM card is already installed in the car.

The advantage here is that the signal is picked up by an external antenna, which has a greater reception capacity than a cell phone. Even though you have to purchase a data plan to use it, it's worth highlighting the possibility of using the internet in the car.

Furthermore, the model features a range of electronic and connectivity gadgets that will please even the most tech-savvy, such as: MyLink multimedia system, rear USB ports, digital air conditioning, multifunction steering wheel, and wireless charger.

Pros: Ergonomics and drivability

Here we have two very positive and pleasant points present in the Onix Plus.

Both the ergonomics and the handling of the model are derived from the overall package.

The new GEM platform, combined with a high-strength steel structure, control and traction systems, and a well-balanced engine and transmission, ensures the model offers a high level of driving pleasure.

The model offers smooth acceleration, handles obstacles on streets, avenues and highways with ease and dexterity, and also boasts excellent fuel consumption, whether running on gasoline or ethanol.

Pros: Performance

Both 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder engines seem pointless for those who like a vehicle with good performance.

That's why it's important to explain everything properly before jumping to conclusions.

The Onix Plus performs excellently. Its acceleration and pick-up exceed the expectations of a buyer of this type of car.

As proof of this, forget the 1.0 engine and focus on the famous power-to-weight ratio, which reaches 9.6 kg/hp.

This number is much better than famous vehicles from the brand known for their performance, such as the fondly remembered Vectra 2.0 or the recent Cruze 1.8.

Pros: Low maintenance cost

Here we have another very positive point in our list of pros and cons of the Chevrolet Onix Plus.

Even with affordable maintenance costs, it's important to look to the future, especially with cars costing what they do today.

The mandatory preventive maintenance required to maintain the warranty is easily affordable.

Now, thinking long-term, it's important to keep in mind that the automaker went against the grain of the competition by opting for indirect injection, instead of the direct injection used in other modern turbocharged engines.

Therefore, we can state upfront that no owner will have to spend a fortune on maintaining the complex direct injection system that uses expensive high-pressure injectors that do not tolerate poor-quality fuels.

Regarding brakes and suspension, although they are not modern, they are inexpensive to maintain. Furthermore, the high sales volume will help to spread the availability of spare parts and the knowledge of mechanics.

Pros: Interior space

Measuring almost 4.5 meters in length and with a 2.6-meter wheelbase, the Chevrolet Onix Plus has the size of mid-size sedans from the 2000s.

image

With this, there is more than enough space for all occupants. Even with a reduction in volume, the trunk is still able to accommodate large amounts of luggage, ensuring peace of mind for trips with friends or family.

Pros: Security speaks loudly

When it comes to safety, the Onix Plus stands out positively. The model received the highest possible rating for both adults and children in the Latin NCAP test.

All versions of the Onix come standard with a complete safety package that includes 6 airbags – front, side, and curtain airbags.

In addition, the model features side turn signal repeaters, stability and traction control, seat belts and headrests for all occupants, and Isofix child seat anchors in the rear seat.

Cons: Excessive use of plastic in the finish.

Starting with our negative points in the list of pros and cons of the Chevrolet Onix Plus, we have an item that may vary from person to person, which is the excessive use of plastic in the finish.

image

For a model that costs around £$ 85,000 in its top-of-the-line version, the excessive use of plastic, even if of good quality, may displease the most demanding consumers.

Against: Values

And lastly, we have the values as a point that many people might see as negative.

Today, the Onix Plus has prices starting at around R$64,000 and reaching R$85,000, which is beyond the reach of most Brazilians nowadays.

For someone looking for value for money, there are many options for used vehicles that can be purchased in the R$ 80 thousand range that offer interesting features in terms of performance, handling, finish and equipment.

Conclusion

And as we've said many times in our vehicle reviews, there isn't a single vehicle in the world that is 100% appealing to the public.

There's always someone who will complain about something, while another praises the same item. The truth is that our experts consider the Onix Plus to be a great vehicle, and this fair and honest assessment is confirmed by the sedan's high sales figures.

Well, if after reviewing our list of pros and cons of Chevrolet Onix Plus If you still want to buy a copy, rest assured, our experts can also help you with that.
