Today, safety tests on vehicles in Brazil are carried out by Latin NCAP – New Car Assessment Programme.
This is an automotive safety program founded in October 2010 with the aim of evaluating and improving the safety of vehicles operating in Latin America for both adult and child passengers.

10. Renault Kwid
In tenth position among the safest popular cars in Brazil we have the Renault Kwid, which is also currently the car cheaper from the Brazilian market.
This model is the only one among subcompacts that offers four airbags as standard across all its variants. Its competitors, the Up! and the Mobi, do not have these features, even as optional extras.
The Renault Kwid scored 22.85 out of 34 possible points for adult safety and 33.87 out of 49 possible points for child protection, and therefore received a three-star rating in tests conducted by Latin NCAP.
The small Renault also features an Isofix system for attaching child car seats.
9. Hyundai HB20
The HB20 is among the best-selling cars in Brazil and has achieved a four-star safety rating.
When it comes to adult safety, the model scored 22.53 out of a possible 34 points, and for children, the score was 29.64 points.
The entry-level model offers an Isofix system with Top Tether and a collapsible steering column designed to protect the driver in frontal collisions. Side airbags are only available on more expensive versions.
8. Ford Ka
THE Ford Ka It also received four stars in total, but it is safer than the HB20 because it scored 22.83 points in adult protection and 35.41 for child protection.
The Ka comes standard with two airbags, ABS brakes, and an EBD system. Like its predecessors, it also features Isofix and power windows/locks. It's another good option in our market.
7. Renault Sandero and Logan
In seventh place we have the Sandero and Logan together. The models, which differ only in trunk space, have been updated and have improved their previous scores.
The "siblings" received scores of 23.40 and 38.52 for adult and child protection respectively, thus boasting a 4-star safety rating.
One great thing about both models is that even their entry-level versions come standard with airbags. A real draw for drivers who value safety.
6. Toyota Yaris
Although not entirely popular due to its price, the Toyota Yaris is becoming increasingly accessible to Brazilians.
The Japanese car received four stars in its latest safety test, scoring 26.99 out of 34 for adult protection and 38.05 out of 49 for child protection.
Today, the entry-level version of the Yaris comes with dual airbags, traction and stability control, ABS and EBD brakes, as well as hill start assist and Isofix and Top Tether systems.
5. Toyota Etios
The Etios also earned a spot on our list of the safest popular cars in Brazil.
The small Japanese car also received four stars in terms of safety after an evaluation by Latin NCAP.
The model achieved 25.42 points for adult occupant protection and 40 points for child occupant protection. A very positive number.
The entry-level version of the Etios offers three-point seatbelts and headrests for all five occupants, as well as dual front airbags. In addition, the compact car also features an Isofix child seat anchoring system.
4. Volkswagen Up!
Here we have the first five-star model. The Up! was very well evaluated and achieved important safety ratings, making it a great option for those looking for a safe vehicle.
In terms of adult safety scores, the Up! achieved 25.86 out of a possible 34 points, and in child safety, the score was 39.54 out of a possible 49.
The entry-level version offers dual airbags, emergency braking alert, and Isofix system with Top Tether. The entry-level TSI turbo version also features traction control.
3. Honda Fit and City
Taking the bronze medal in terms of safety are the Japanese duo Honda Fit and Honda City. They aren't exactly considered very popular due to their somewhat high price. Both received five stars.
Both scored above 29 points out of a possible 34 in adult safety. In the child safety rating, the Fit achieved 39.48 points while the City reached 41.81 points out of a possible 49.
Both models come equipped as standard with stability and traction control, airbags, driving assistance systems, and braking alert, in addition to the Isofix system.
2. Chevrolet Onix and Onix Plus
In second place among the most popular cars in Brazil, we have the best-selling model along with its sibling with an extended trunk. Both earned five stars in safety.
The adult protection score was 28.9 for the hatchback and 28.34 for the sedan out of a possible 34, and for children the score was 44.33 and 42.33 out of a possible 49, respectively.
Both models, in all their versions, feature six airbags, traction and stability control, as well as progressive electric power steering. They also include an Isofix system for securing child car seats.
In addition to being a sales leader, the Onix can boast of being one of the safest cars in Brazil.
1. Volkswagen Polo
And in the lead we have the restyled Volkswagen PoloAlthough it's not as popular as some models in terms of price, when compared to others from the same brand, it's easy to see that it offers excellent value for money.
The Hatchback received five stars for safety. As for the overall score, the Polo achieved 32.13 out of a possible 34 points for adult protection and 43 out of a possible 49 for child protection.
The model stands out for offering four airbags as standard in all its versions and an IsoFix system with Top tether.
In higher-end versions, the vehicle gains features that make it even safer, such as electronic differential lock, fatigue detector, and traction and stability controls.

As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, the safety of Brazilian cars has greatly improved in the last decade and should remain so going forward. This is very positive considering that Brazilian traffic is among the most dangerous in the world.
