Under the hood, the 2020 Volkswagen T-Cross features two different engine options. 

The simpler versions are equipped with a 1.0 TSI Flex three-cylinder engine, the same one used in other vehicles from the German automaker, such as the Golf, Polo, and Virtus. This engine has a turbocharger and can develop up to 128 horsepower with ethanol. 

Models equipped with the 1.0 TSI engine offer the option of a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. With the automatic transmission option, gear changes can be made via paddle shifters located behind the steering wheel for manual gear changes. 

The 1.4 engine, also flex-fuel, features four cylinders from the Golf Highline, also with a turbocharger. Being more powerful, it naturally provides a sportier driving experience, as it reaches up to 150 horsepower. 

The 1.4 engine is only available with a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, featuring paddle shifters behind the steering wheel and a torque converter. 

Another distinguishing feature of the 1.4 engine is its driving mode selector, offering the following modes: normal; eco; sport; and individual. This change in driving modes allows for altering certain engine functionality parameters, taking into account the preferences and needs of each driver. 

The 1.0 engine is available in the TSI and 200 TSI models, while the 1.4 engine is available in the 1.4 250 TSI models. Regardless of the engine chosen, the drive is always front-wheel drive.
