Gurgel Motores S/A was a Brazilian car manufacturer that, while achieving good sales results, ultimately succumbed due to excessive taxes coupled with a lack of government incentives. Gurgel was popularly known as "Ugly." 

In 1987, the company launched the BR 800 model with the aim of offering an inexpensive, economical, popular, and domestically produced vehicle. The goal was for the vehicle to cost no more than $3,000, but due to tax issues, its price ended up being set at $7,000. 

Although it was economical, didn't have belts, and had water cooling, only about 7,000 units of the model were sold. Its poor performance compared to competitors like the Fiat Uno, and the sales system that directly involved buying company stock, made the "ugly" car a resounding failure, becoming known as one of the worst cars ever produced in Brazil.
