Produced by Volkswagen, the Variant II did not achieve the success the automaker had hoped for with the Brazilian public.
Even for its time, its engine was weak and didn't perform well. Furthermore, the constant need for maintenance ended up alienating the general public. As a result, sales were weak, and even today, many consider the Variant II a failure in the Brazilian automotive market.
