20 – Takata – explosive airbag

This recall is not only one of the most bizarre car recalls in history, but it's the largest recall of all time, an extreme problem that caused 19 deaths and nearly 200 injuries. In short, an airbag is a safety mechanism used in collisions where the airbag cushions the impact against the passengers. It turns out that Takata models had airbags manufactured with unstable mechanisms that could injure passengers. It was so unstable that the airbag could deploy at any moment, even without a collision, which at the time was called a "time bomb." More than 100 million airbags were affected, and the case went to court, resulting in the company paying a $100 billion fine to the US government, and three company executives were tried for conspiracy.
