Currently, there are already 5 new traffic laws published by Contran, the National Traffic Council, which come into effect in 2023. So, check out the changes below to avoid making any mistakes!

Window film

The first traffic law we're going to review so you can be aware of it is the law regarding window tinting! The changes concern the amount of light that enters the window, the colors of the tint, as well as bubbles and the mirroring effect of the film!

The amount of light passing through the dark film must be at least 70%. In other words, films with a lower index are prohibited, and you can be fined at any time!

Furthermore, the new legislation regarding 70% applies to all window tint colors! Anyone who violates the law will receive five points on their license, as it is a serious offense, and their vehicle will be impounded for immediate repair!

Windshield and bubbles

On the other hand, this rule only applies to the windshield and front side windows. For the rear of the car, a minimum index of 28% is permitted!

In reality, this is a law that has been somewhat relaxed, because previously the minimum transparency requirement was 75%. In other words, if you were already compliant with the law before, rest assured that you will not face any difficulties.

Furthermore, it is also strictly forbidden to use films that show any type of bubbles, tears, or other damage on any of the windows, not just the windshield! Moreover, the fine is R$195.23!

Low Beam Headlights on Highways

Another traffic law to be aware of, which has recently undergone a slight change, concerns the use of low-beam headlights on highways. Previously, it was always necessary to leave the headlights on, even during the day.

Now, if your vehicle has daytime running lights, this action is no longer necessary. Furthermore, the law only requires the use of low-beam headlights on single-lane highways!

In other words, on other types of roads there is no longer a need to leave the lights on during the day. For example, on those that have some kind of division between the two lanes, such as a median strip, a retaining wall, among others.

And what about disobeying this traffic law?

In this case, it's good to be aware that violating this law results in a fine of R$1,130.16! This is because it's considered a medium-level infraction and costs four points on your driver's license!

Right turn at red lights

The definitive answer for those who think they can run red lights in the middle of the night is that this is completely illegal. It's a serious infraction that also results in 7 points on your driver's license.

Furthermore, if you commit such an infraction, you must pay a fine of R$293.47. So it's worth paying attention to traffic laws to avoid fines!

However, the big news in traffic legislation is that if there is a sign indicating the possibility of a right turn, it is permitted to run a red light. To do this, you must already be in the right lane.

How do I run a red light?

First, remember that this sign does not indicate an obligation. In other words, you can turn right at a red light, but if you need to continue, simply remain stopped, as there is no infraction.

Furthermore, pedestrians remain the priority! So, regardless of the time, proceed with caution and check if anyone is crossing the street!

Helmet

According to resolution 940/2022, all drivers and passengers must wear motorcycle helmets when on roads using vehicles such as motorcycles, mopeds, motorized tricycles, or quadricycles!

Furthermore, it is crucial that the safety equipment is being used correctly, fastened at the jaw and not just loosely placed over the head!

Another point to be aware of in this traffic law is that all helmets must be certified by the National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology (INMETRO).

Furthermore, it's essential that it has reflective elements that help identify the rider from a distance. So keep an eye out to avoid buying a helmet that doesn't meet the standards!

Visors and fines!

Furthermore, the rules regarding the use of protective visors remain in effect. In fact, if your helmet does not have a visor, you must replace it with appropriate protective eyewear! This applies to both passengers and drivers!

Furthermore, non-compliance is considered a very serious offense and, in this case, results in seven points on the driver's license and a fine of R$$293.47. Therefore, the driver's license will be confiscated and the driver will not be allowed to drive!

Driver's license renewal deadline

To conclude our list of traffic laws, it's important to be aware of the expiration date of your driver's license. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the expiration dates of driver's licenses were extended.

However, since the beginning of the year, Contran (National Traffic Council) has regulated the deadline for renewing driver's licenses to 30 days after expiration, changing this flexibility of recent years!

Furthermore, remember that you cannot drive with an expired driver's license. So, if this is your case, renew it as soon as possible online through the Detran website or at a Poupatempo service center.
