Is it worth buying at car auctions?

Mas, afinal, vale a pena comprar nos leilões de carros?
But ultimately, is it worth buying at car auctions?

As we've stated, if you don't have a large budget to buy a car, the Federal Police car auction could be your chance. In fact, the price is one of the biggest attractions of this event.

However, some people still have considerable doubts about whether this option is really a good one. Therefore, we decided to show the advantages and disadvantages of buying cars at Federal Police auctions.

First of all, it's important to point out that if you intend to buy a car through an auction, you need to know all the details of the process. This way, you avoid unnecessary problems and feel more confident about your choice.

Since they are open to the public, both individuals and legal entities can participate in the Federal Police car auction. The winner of the auction is the one who makes the highest bid, just like in any other bidding auction.

If you manage to close a good deal, it means that now that you are the new owner of the car, you can acquire a used one and spend up to 30% less than what is established in the FIPE table.

But what are the key points to consider when buying a vehicle through a Federal Police car auction, how to close a good deal, and how does it all work? Check it out below!

How can you verify if you're getting a good deal at a Federal Police car auction?

First of all, you need to verify that the company conducting the auction is certified and complies with legal requirements. After all, it is essential that it is registered in a public notice.

If you are truly interested in participating in the Federal Police car auctions, you should find all the information on the website of the organization conducting the auction. If you are acquiring an official car, that is, a police vehicle, the information will be found on the Federal Police website itself.

Before sealing the deal and making the purchase, check the prices of the same model you want on sales websites. After all, you don't want emotion to take over and you to hastily place a high bid when you could have gotten a better deal.

Therefore, assess whether you are not bidding too high, paying an unnecessarily high price.

It is important to note that financing is not possible in the case of auctions held by the Federal Police. Therefore, prepare your budget for a cash payment.

And no, the costs don't stop there! In addition to the bid on the vehicle, you also need to pay a percentage of the car's value to the auctioneer, some administrative fees, and the necessary documentation to transfer the vehicle to your name. Plus, if needed, you'll have to pay for any repairs.

Therefore, calculate all the costs. And then, see that the final value should be below the discount applied by the Foundation Institute of Economic Research – Fipe.

If this is not the case, you will be making a bad deal.

Types of auctions held by the Federal Highway Police

Mas, afinal, quais são os tipos de leilões?
But what exactly are the different types of auctions?

Currently, there are three types of car auctions that are held: insurance company auctions, financial recovery auctions, and manufacturer auctions.

Insurance company auctions are for vehicles that have been recovered after being stolen or robbed, and subsequently involved in an accident. For this reason, the car may be in very poor condition. However, there's also a chance it could be in excellent condition.

Auctions held for financial recovery purposes are conducted by banks (financial institutions). The vehicles in these cases are models that have been recovered by government agencies, the police, the Department of Motor Vehicles (Detran), or even state-owned companies. In this type of auction, you will find all types of automobiles. Therefore, caution is necessary!

Finally, auctions held by car manufacturers can be the most advantageous of the three types. After all, since the model belongs to the manufacturer itself, its condition tends to be better. However, caution is still necessary.

How to participate in the Federal Highway Police auction

To participate in the auctions offered by the Federal Highway Police, simply register as an individual (ID) or legal entity (CNPJ), indicating your interest.

The auction process for cars from the Federal Highway Police works the same way as other auctions from government agencies. The difference is that, since these are assets seized by the police, public visitation – in person – is permitted at the addresses previously indicated in the notice for each auction.

For this purpose, all vehicles to be auctioned at each event are identified beforehand.

In addition to the in-person auction, a virtual auction is held simultaneously. You can follow it in the "Auditorium" tab, which will be indicated on the respective website.

The Electronic Auction System is where the auctions take place. They are conducted by the Brazilian Federal Revenue Service (RFB). All electronic auctions of seized or abandoned goods are carried out by the RFB.

Anyone can participate in the auction. To view it, one can do so via the internet, in the "View Auctions" section..

If she is interested in participating in the Electronic Auction, she needs to access the RFB website, Portal (e-CAC).

For this, however, she needs a valid Digital Certificate. And then, she must choose the "Electronic Auction System" service option.

We would like to point out that all procedures carried out in the Federal Highway Police's electronic car auctions are regulated by Ministry of Finance Ordinance No. 548/2009 and Federal Revenue Service Ordinance No. 2,206/2010.
