There are many possibilities for calculating the amounts and even for installments. But rest assured, we will provide you with all the information so that you don't miss the deadline or end up owing money to the government! So, shall we begin?

What is IPVA?

Well, as we explained a little above, this is the Vehicle Property Tax. In other words, every person who owns a land vehicle needs to pay tax to the government.

On the other hand, maritime and aircraft vehicles receive tax exemption. That is, they do not need to pay the IPVA (Vehicle Property Tax). Furthermore, the calculation is relative to the vehicle's origin, so each state in Brazil sets a different rate.

Therefore, the state SEFAZ, the Finance and Planning Secretariat, is responsible for organizing the payment of this tax and all the details. Furthermore, 50% of the total tax amount is allocated for state use.

Meanwhile, 20% is allocated to education through FUNDEB (Fund for the Maintenance and Development of Basic Education and the Enhancement of Education Professionals). Finally, the remainder stays with the municipalities.

This is the most common question among truck owners. The tax rate (percentage used to calculate the tax) can change annually from state to state.

Thus, in São Paulo, for example, the value remained similar to the previous year. That is, 2% for minibuses and buses and 1.5% for trucks!

How to calculate?

Furthermore, to calculate the IPVA (Vehicle Property Tax) value for trucks, you must access the FIPE table, which regulates prices. Then, check the price of your vehicle. Next, multiply that value by your state's tax rate.

On the other hand, if the vehicle is brand new, i.e., with zero mileage, the value is that on the invoice.

However, in addition to that, you can pay your IPVA (vehicle tax) in installments. But you should take into account that the minimum amount for each installment must be R$$68.52. Furthermore, the maximum number of installments is five.

So, pay attention to the deadlines. Each installment is due on the 20th of each month! On the other hand, if you paid the entire amount in January in one go, you received a discount of 30%.

You can pay your IPVA (Vehicle Property Tax) in several ways. For example, you can generate the payment slip on the Detran (Department of Motor Vehicles) website. You can then pay via internet banking, bank slip, debit card, lottery outlets, and banks.

In addition, there are some apps that simplify the entire payment process and allow you to pay directly through the app.

On the other hand, in February it is possible to pay both the second installment of your truck IPVA (vehicle tax) and the single payment, thus settling your debts. However, unlike the single payment in January, in February you do not receive any discount.

In addition, be aware of the specific rules of your state regarding the entire payment process, calculation of amounts, and installments.

IPVA exemption for trucks

In some states, trucks older than 20 years are exempt from paying vehicle property tax (IPVA). On the other hand, in other states, this exemption applies after 18, 15, or even 10 years of use, as is the case in Rio Grande do Norte.

Furthermore, other states do not have a date for the exemption, so it is only possible to find out by checking the annual schedule from the Department of Motor Vehicles (Detran) by region!

Furthermore, be careful not to delay payment of your installments. Each day of delay increases the amount by 0.33% in penalties. If this period exceeds 60 days, the total amount is 20% of the total amount.

Other harmful consequences include the addition of 7 points to your driver's license, a fine of R$$293.47, and vehicle impoundment. So, pay your IPVA (vehicle tax) as soon as possible! If you have difficulty paying, there are apps that make this process easier.
