With a distinctive look intended to convey a sense of robustness, the 2020 Hyundai HB20X, like its previous versions, is an HB20 with a more attractive design. For fans of the model, the design of the new generation, launched in 2019, still divides opinions among brand enthusiasts to this day.
The 2020 Hyundai HB20X overuses plastic parts to reinforce the rugged look of an urban adventurer. Under the hood, one of the main complaints is the outdated 1.6 16V engine, which now delivers up to 130 horsepower when fueled with ethanol.
If you're thinking about buying the new 2020 Hyundai HB20X, don't do it without first reading the review we at Senhor Carros have prepared. It's incredibly helpful content.
HB20X history
The HB20X was launched in the Brazilian market in early 2013. At the time, the small, locally produced crossover hatchback debuted with prices ranging from R$48,000 to R$54,000. The varying prices reflected the optional extras, which could or could not be included in the package.
Although it had a more robust look and a higher suspension, the Hyundai HB20X wasn't designed for off-road driving at all. Proof of this is the absence of all-terrain tires. According to the manufacturer, the car's target audience sought a higher driving position and the ability to navigate potholes without significant impact.
After a year on the market, the first change to the HB20X lineup was that the Premium version would only be equipped with an automatic transmission, while the basic version of the model remained restricted to a manual transmission.
In October 2015, Hyundai launched the 2016 HB20X with its first facelift, where the vehicle received profound changes to the front, rear, and interior. In addition, other noteworthy changes included new six-speed manual and automatic transmissions, and the switch to electric power steering.
In 2017, the automaker announced the arrival of the 2018 model with a standard multimedia center, but this feature was restricted to the top-of-the-line HB20X Premium model. For the basic version, the HB20 X Style, the feature was an optional extra.
The model also gained new 16-inch alloy wheels with a diamond-cut finish and black details.
In 2019, the Hyundai HB20X ended up receiving chrome exterior door handles and trim on the side windows, a leather steering wheel and gearshift levers, and leather-covered seats, door panels, and gearshift lever.
We've finally arrived in 2020, and the model has gained some new features, as we'll show you now.

The 2020 Hyundai HB20X features a refreshed and futuristic design.
The automaker makes no secret of the fact that the design of the new Hyundai HB20X was inspired by the concept model that was on display at the São Paulo Auto Show in 2018, the Hyundai Saga EV.
The design might displease some purists of the old HB20, but we have to admit it's not ugly. On the exterior, the plastic moldings are exaggerated and eye-catching, fulfilling their purpose of drawing attention.
Overall, the HB20 is more appealing than the conventional versions, after all, it has some distinguishing features such as red accents around the air conditioning vents and visible stitching on the seats, steering wheel, and gearshift knob boot.
More interior space
Compared to the 2019 model, the 2020 Hyundai HB20X gained 3 centimeters in wheelbase, and this is subtly reflected in the interior space. The driver's position is quite comfortable, and those traveling in the back seat do not suffer from a lack of legroom or headroom. One point that stands out is the good level of finish, just like the first HB20 models.
Besides the well-fitted parts, the cabin plastics are of good quality for a car that aims to be "popular," which puts other cars in the same segment to shame, a positive thing in the market.
The 2020 Hyundai HB20x features leather-upholstered seats with visible red stitching that adds a touch of sophistication. And to complete the picture of spaciousness, the trunk is another highlight, with a capacity of 300 liters.
Engine and transmission
Here we have the main weakness of the 2020 Hyundai HB20X. Inexplicably, the model is only sold with the old 1.6 16V engine that has equipped the model since the first generation.
As a way to minimize this "problem," the automaker uses the same formula as the Creta, increasing the power to 130 horsepower when fueled with ethanol.
For those who were expecting the 2020 HB20X with the new 1.0 turbo engine, the disappointment must have been great. This engine is only available in the standard model.
The urban model with an adventurous look comes with two transmission options: manual and automatic. Both have six gears. While the 1.6 engine surpasses the modern 1.0 turbo in power, in practice the Hyundai HB20X proves sluggish in acceleration and speed recovery.
However, you can't blame the six-speed automatic transmission, which is the same in both engine options, but the fact is that the 1.0 turbo engine has more torque and a more linear performance than the "old" 1.6, since it is a more current and renewed technology.
Fuel consumption
The fuel consumption of the 2020 HB20X isn't bad at all, but it could be better.
Within the city, the model achieves 8.1 km/l when fueled with ethanol and 9.3 km/l when running on gasoline. When used for highway driving, the averages are 11.7 km/l and 13.3 km/l with ethanol and gasoline, respectively.
The fuel efficiency figures for the HB20 equipped with the 1.0 turbo engine are superior, both in the city and on highways, using both types of fuel.
Standard equipment and features
The top-of-the-line version of the 2020 Hyundai HB20X, the Diamond Plus, isn't exactly what you'd call cheap. But the consolation is that it offers owners an extensive and generous list of standard equipment.
The model comes equipped with: traction and stability control, hill start assist, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot sensor, cruise control, driver's armrest, air conditioning, multifunction steering wheel, power steering, power locks and windows, trip computer, 16-inch alloy wheels, ISOFIX system, alarm, multimedia center with eight-inch touchscreen and support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
Several features of the HB20X are quite eye-catching, and the air conditioning controls are one of them. They are attractive both for their aesthetic appeal and for deceiving the uninitiated, who might mistake them for a digital system. However, it's actually an analog system with an LCD display, giving it a sophisticated look.
Another item that really stands out is the multimedia center. It's very easy to operate and aesthetically pleasing. The menus make it easy to use, and there are physical buttons for each function. most importantBelow it, there are two USB ports.
Security
Safety is one of the strong points of the 2020 Hyundai HB20X. As mentioned in the standard equipment and features, the model includes stability and traction control.
In addition, the 2020 HB20X features tire pressure monitoring, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking system, legally required ABS brakes, and dual front and side airbags.
Dimensions
The dimensions of the 2020 Hyundai HB20X are as follows:
- Height: 1.54 m;
- Length: 3.97m;
- Width: 1.74 m;
- Wheelbase: 2.53 m.
Versions and prices
The 2020 Hyundai HB20X is sold in the following versions and prices:
- HB20X Vision 1.6 Manual: R$ 62,990;
- HB20X Vision 1.6 Automatic: R$ 67,890;
- HB20X Evolution 1.6 Automatic: R$ 68,990;
- HB20X Diamond 1.6 Automatic: R$ 73,990;
- HB20X Diamond Plus 1.6 Automatic: R$ 77,990.
Conclusion
The 2020 HB20X belongs to a segment that experienced its peak, then declined, and now needs a renewal process. Urban crossovers emerged in the early 2000s and were very successful. However, the arrival of compact SUVs ended up having a direct impact on the market for these models.
Only Hyundai continued to insist on this formula and today has few competitors, with the Argo Trekking and the Ford Ka Freestyle being its main rivals.
Among the positive aspects of the 2020 Hyundai HB20X, we can mention the standard features, which are truly well-equipped, and also the design, inspired by a concept model from the manufacturer. However, the choice of an older, less fuel-efficient engine, coupled with the high prices of all versions, could be a real obstacle to the model's success in the market.
