Ford Territory: What does it actually have?
Almost two years after being introduced to Brazilians as a highlight at the São Paulo Auto Show in 2018, the Ford Territory has finally arrived at Brazilian dealerships.
With an intermediate size, the model is positioned above the EcoSport and below the Edge within Ford's Brazilian portfolio. Its intention, like other launches such as... Corolla Cross It's about competing directly with the segment leader: the Jeep Compass.
To challenge its rivals, the Territory will feature a technology-packed package, including some features never before seen in its category.
Starting with the equipment
As mentioned, the vehicle features some unprecedented items in the SUV category.
The Territory comes standard with 6 airbags and several controls such as stability control, traction control, and hill start assist.
What stands out is the driver assistance package, which includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring, and semi-autonomous parking systems.
The instrument panel is another attraction in itself, as it can be configured with three different display options: Classic, Fashion, and Sport.
Next to the dashboard is the 10.1-inch touchscreen of the multimedia center, which is not the same as that of other Ford models. Although it is comprehensive, its navigation is not very intuitive and may cause some difficulties and confusion at first.
Seeking to be minimalist, Ford grouped several functions into icons that are not easy to identify, something very similar to the changes in Android phones that are not pure Android.
Still talking about equipment, one item that really stands out is the 360-degree camera system that projects the vehicle's image onto the multimedia center. Simply touching an area allows you to view the vehicle from different angles.
Design unites old and new.
Many people don't know this, but Ford and Land Rover had many joint technical partnerships, with the union ending in 2008. But the most attentive and nostalgic eyes will recognize this union when they look at the Territory.
Its robust and "muscular" build, along with the design of the taillights and headlights, is reminiscent of the old Evoque.
The front optical assembly is somewhat tapered, and the taillights have a somewhat outdated shape for a model considered to be from 2021. Even the lettering on the trunk lid is reminiscent of the old English luxury SUV.
But that doesn't mean the Ford Territory is outdated or ugly. Quite the opposite. These elements may only seem strange because the SUV has a distinct visual identity from Ford, given that it originates from the Chinese market.
The interior has more personality.
The vehicle's interior has its own personality and bears similarities to other premium models from the manufacturer. What immediately stands out is the high-quality finish.
When compared to some rivals, the Territory seems to belong to a higher category because its width and wheelbase give the model excellent interior space, especially in the back seat.
Maintenance has become a marketing tool for sales.
To gain an edge over the competition and secure a place in the sun, Ford offers an aggressive maintenance plan.
Thus, the Territory is being offered with a three-year warranty and fixed maintenance costs. The first three services cost only R$ 1,382, and its parts basket has the lowest cost among unscheduled maintenance items.
In addition, Ford promised a special launch offer with insurance valued at approximately R$ 3,500.00.
Versions, engine options, and fuel consumption.
Initially, the Ford Territory is sold in only two versions: the SEL and the Titanium. Both are equipped with the 1.5 turbo Ecoboost engine, powered exclusively by gasoline, capable of developing 150 horsepower with a torque of 22.9 kgfm.
The transmission is the automatic CVT with eight simulated gears. The combination of both delivers good performance with good fuel consumption levels.
The engine is quite agile and responds well during acceleration and speed recovery.
Considering its size and weight, the Territory's fuel consumption is quite good, since according to Ford the averages are 9.2 km/L in the city and 10 km/L on the highway.
Dimensions and values
The SUV's dimensions are: 4.58 meters in length; 1.94 meters in width; 1.67 meters in height and a 2.72-meter wheelbase.
The model's weak point is the trunk capacity, which is only 348 liters, leaving much to be desired in a vehicle of this size and potentially negatively impacting sales.
Regarding prices, the SEL version of the Ford Territory starts at R$ 179,990 and the Titanium version has a starting price of R$ 197,990.
Conclusion
As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, the Territory has a clear and thankless mission ahead: To achieve a place in the sun in the mid-size SUV segment.
If we take into account the forecasts that vehicle sales may grow by more than 30% in 2021, Ford's bosses can be encouraged.
