Not only in Brazil, but throughout the world, the end of cars with combustion engines is drawing ever closer. This is a measure that moves in the direction of sustainability. 

For example, countries like Norway, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and India intend to ban vehicles with combustion engines this decade! This is because, although it may seem extreme, it is one of the best options for the environment.

Thus, the ban benefits the population in the short term, as it will make the air in large cities cleaner and more breathable. But, in addition, in the long term, it tends to reduce the negative impact on the greenhouse effect from CO² emissions.

In fact, both gasoline and diesel are highly polluting! However, there is another more sustainable fuel, namely ethanol, which is being promoted in the country!

With the reintroduction of fuel taxes in Brazil starting in 2023, ethanol was the fuel that saw the least changes, in an attempt to remain the cheapest option for the population.

This project, authored by federal deputy Alberto Neto, states that by 2035 some vehicles should be fully electric, such as:

Other vehicles, such as tractors, trucks, and buses, are expected to be included in the scheme only from 2045 onwards. On the other hand, long-distance buses may remain hybrid vehicles.

In other words, these vehicles can run on electricity and combustion. Therefore, there would need to be an adaptation and transition period before citizens can acquire electric vehicles.

Furthermore, the infrastructure of gas stations would need to change with the end of combustion engines.

As we mentioned earlier, this is a recent project, filed in February 2023. In other words, it still has a long way to go before approval. Therefore, there is no timetable for approval.

First, it must be analyzed and debated within the relevant committees of the chamber. Then, it would need to be voted on, then pass through the Senate, and finally be signed by the president!

Therefore, this bill is only in its early stages and needs time to be fully approved.

Furthermore, in 2020 Senator Ciro Nogueira attempted to create a similar bill aimed at ending the use of combustion engines in the country. However, the bill ended up being shelved!

For example, on the island of Fernando de Noronha, in Pernambuco, the government signed a decree-law that initiated a zero-carbon project on the island in 2019.

Thus, by 2030, cars with combustion engines should be phased out. In other words, only electric motors will be allowed. Furthermore, the island has established a partnership with the automaker Renault.

With this, residents can buy their electric cars at a discount from the manufacturer. In this way, the archipelago is becoming a national benchmark in energy transition!
