How to get a driver's license: Step by step

Many people can't wait to turn 18 so they can start the car, put it in first gear, and drive off. Traveling without a destination and being free from walking or even having to depend on public transportation is a dream for many.

If you're in this group and don't know where to start, just follow our step-by-step guide to learn once and for all how to get a driver's license.

Step 1: Age, literacy, and documentation.

The first step to getting your driver's license is being over 18 years old, being able to read and write, and having a national identity card (RG) and taxpayer identification number (CPF). Without these, unfortunately, it will not be possible to proceed with obtaining your driver's license.

Step 2: Choosing a driving school

Now that you're of legal age and have fully completed the first step, it's time to choose a driving school. There, you will be directed to the well-known CFC – Driver Training Center.

Autoescola e CFC
Driving schools and driver training centers are essential for obtaining a driver's license.

This is the company responsible for providing all the necessary support to candidates who wish to obtain their driver's license.

3. Step: Performing examinations

The third step for those wishing to obtain a driver's license is to take two initial exams: a psychological exam and a physical and mental aptitude exam.

These exams are conducted by professionals and clinics accredited and designated by the Department of Motor Vehicles (Detran). Only these professionals are authorized to perform these exams.

Step 4: Theoretical-technical course

After all the previous steps, it's time for the theoretical and technical course.

In this program, candidates for a driver's license undergo 45 hours of classes with pedagogical content determined by CONTRAN – the National Traffic Council.

In the course, everyone learns about traffic rules, defensive driving, first aid, the environment, citizenship, and basic mechanics. Although it may seem like a waste of time, it is a very important part of getting a driver's license.

Step 5: Theoretical exam

After completing 45 hours of classes, it's time to take the theory exam.

This exam is administered by the Department of Motor Vehicles (Detran), and it assesses the prospective driver's knowledge of the entire course content and whether the candidate has truly learned what was taught.

Step 6: Simulator lessons and driving

Once they pass the written exam, it's time to begin practical lessons. At this stage, candidates undergo simulated training determined by CONTRAN (National Traffic Council).

Each student is presented with situations that could not be safely reproduced and practiced on public roads.

The classes are progressive, meaning the student experiences environments that replicate reality in different situations with varying degrees of difficulty, and thus learns the correct way to react to each of these events.

Simulador
Simulator lessons are important.

Simulator lessons help candidates solidify the learned content, become familiar with the basic commands and controls of the car, and gain driving experience in different situations, such as highways, mountain roads, rain, or fog, for example.

Those who wish can also take three more optional classes in the simulator, which will cover nighttime content.

Step 7: Practical lessons in the vehicle

At this stage, the student will complete 20 practical lessons in the vehicle, or 17 if they have chosen to take the three optional night driving lessons in the driving simulator.

During driving lessons, the candidate will be subjected to driving on public roads with traffic, pedestrians, and other inclement weather conditions.

With the results of the simulator practice, which can generate a report detailing the incidence of behavioral errors, traffic violations, and areas where the student had the most difficulty, it is possible to intensify practice in situations that need improvement.

Step 8: Driving test

After completing the practical lessons, the final step to obtaining a driver's license is the famous and dreaded driving test.

In this program, the abilities of prospective drivers are evaluated in specific situations, such as parallel parking, adherence to traffic laws, and everyday driving scenarios, as previously determined by the responsible authorities.

After subsequent approvals, the driving test is the final step.

With approval in the exam, the student it comes to an end He completes the entire process and then obtains permission to drive.

Driver's license categories

Although many people don't know it, there are different types of driver's license categories. They are:

  • Category A: Allows the driving of motorcycles and tricycles;
  • Category B: Allows the driving of passenger vehicles, such as cars;
  • Category C: Allows the driving of cargo vehicles weighing over 3.5 tons;
  • Category D: Allows driving vehicles with eight or more passengers;
  • Category E: Allows the driving of cargo vehicles weighing over 6 tons.

A driver's license is different from a learner's permit.

Something important to mention is that when you get your first driver's license, for the first year it is not considered a driver's license, but rather a permit to drive.

Also known as a driver's license, the first driver's license only allows the driving of vehicles in categories A and B, which, as we showed earlier, allow driving motorcycles, tricycles, and cars.

A driver's license is granted for a period of one year to those who have passed both the theoretical and practical exams.

After a period of one year, the CNH – Carteira Nacional de Habilitação (National Driver's License), or permanent driver's license, is granted, provided that the driver has not committed any serious or very serious traffic violations or is a repeat offender of medium-level violations.

A category C driver's license can only be obtained after one year of experience in categories A and B.
