Safe and affordable cars have become a real obsession for Brazilians, especially in light of... crisis scenario like the current situation that has been created by the coronavirus pandemic.
Since cars became desirable and even necessary items, the pursuit of safety has become continuous. This is so true that cars that don't perform well in crash tests end up having poor sales figures.
Over the years, features that were once only found in luxury cars, such as airbags, ABS braking systems, and even traction and stability control, can now be easily found in simpler models.
Since the market for brand-new cars is out of reach for many people, we at Senhor Carros have selected some great options for vehicles that are both affordable and safe. Want to check them out?

7. Ford Fiesta SE
Known and consequently nicknamed the New Fiesta, Hatch The Ford SE arrived in Brazil as an imported model back in 2011, with only the SE version available, although it had three additional packages.
Since we're talking about safe and inexpensive cars, the third package is the one that interests us most.
After all, the model was equipped with 7 airbags, ABS brakes, traction and stability controls, and had a hefty price tag for the time. Nowadays, it's possible to find examples costing around 30,000 (currency unspecified).
A tip to make your search easier is to pay attention to the wheels and bumpers. The most complete models have 16-inch wheels and daytime running LEDs in the front bumpers.
6. Chevrolet Cruze LTZ
The Chevrolet Cruze has always been known as one of the safest cars in its category. This is because all versions were offered with 4 airbags, ABS brakes, and traction and stability controls.
But the LTZ version manages to be even more complete in terms of safety, as it also includes curtain airbags and other standard features that will delight owners.
The prices for the older Cruze LTZ models, both hatchback and sedan versions, are around R$40,000. For purists, it's possible to find models with a manual transmission.
5. Mitsubishi ASX AWD
For those who like SUVs, it's also easy to find affordable and safe options, such as the Mitsubishi ASX.
The model is actually a veteran that has undergone few changes since its arrival way back in 2010 and already featured safety items such as ABS brakes, traction and stability controls, and 7 airbags.
Although many experts claim the model has 7 airbags, the manufacturer says the ASX AWD actually has nine. This is because it counts four curtain airbags when in fact many only count two.
In addition to the features we mentioned, the ASX AWD also offers four-wheel drive. Ideal for dirt roads. or slippery floors with poor grip.
If you use the FIPE table to conduct research, you will come across prices slightly above the R$ 40 thousand for the first examples of the model.
4. Fiat Freemont Precision
For those with families who need to transport many people and prioritize safety, it's possible to find older models of the Fiat Freemont Precision.
The station wagon is much larger, safer, and cheaper than options that might seem obvious, such as the Chevrolet Spin or the Fiat Doblò.
The Precision version featured two extra seats. This allowed the model to carry up to seven passengers and still have some trunk space to spare.
When it comes to safety, the package is comprehensive and includes six airbags, ABS brakes, and traction and stability control.
On online car sales sites and even on FIPE table The price of a 2012 Fiat Freemont Precision station wagon starts in the range of R$ 43 thousand.
But if you want to combine safety with fuel economy, our advice is to look for models from 2014 onwards. It was in that year that the transmission started having six gears and became more functional and economical.
3. Hyundai Azera
In its first years of sale in Brazil, the Azera had good sales figures thanks to Hyundai's aggressive marketing and its extremely competitive price.
The model was large and priced similarly to mid-size cars, competing directly with the Civic and Corolla in sales figures. However, the Azera also stood out for its safety.
The sedan boasts a comprehensive safety package with front and side airbags, even in the rear seats. Furthermore, ABS brakes, traction control, and stability control are also standard features of this forgotten giant.
If you're looking for a large, safe, and affordable car, the Azera is a great option for you. After all, prices start in the range of R$ 25 to R$ 27 thousand.
The only problem is having a large garage space and keeping the tank full, after all, it's six cylinders that like to drink a lot of gasoline.
2. Renault Fluence Privilege
Another car that has always been packed with safety features but that few remember is the Renault Fluence Privilege.
Its sales were so poor that the model was discontinued without any warning from the manufacturer.
Without intending to, but making a cheap pun since its launch in 2010, the Renault Fluence Privilege has privileged its owners with 6 airbags, ABS brakes, and stability and traction controls.
At the time of its launch, its main competitors, the Civic and Corolla, did not yet have as many safety features.
Because it's a model that almost nobody remembers, the Fluence Privilege is quite inexpensive. 2011 models can be found for around R$32,000.
1. Fiat 500
And to round out our list of safe and affordable cars, we have the famous, and why not charming? Fiat 500!
The model arrived in Brazil in 2009 and was only appealing in terms of its looks. Its size and price ended up deterring many people, which is why it sold poorly in the first few years here, mainly because it was imported from Poland.
In total, only 2,200 units of the Polish Fiat 500 were brought to Brazil, packed with safety features that at the time included 7 airbags, ABS brakes, and traction and stability controls. All of these were standard features.
After Fiat realized that importing the 500 from Poland wasn't a good idea, the model started coming from Mexico at more affordable and attractive prices. This caused sales to take off, but some safety features became optional.
Therefore, our suggestion is that if you have the patience, look for Fiat 500 models from mid-2009. They are safer and do not yet have the problematic Dualogic transmission.
Today it is possible to find a Fiat 500 in good condition for around 25,000 (currency unspecified).
Conclusion
Contrary to what many people believe, it is possible to find cars that are both safe and inexpensive. However, it requires some time and energy to make the search successful.
