10 exclusive car models on the national market
There are many car models made especially for Brazil.
And something important to say about them is that some were a sales success.
However, others had a hard and unsuccessful life.
But the truth is, you've seen many of them driving around without even imagining that they only existed here.
But that's in the past.
The time has come to find out what these unique models of Brazilian streets and roads are.
Ready to leave?
10. Chevrolet Monza Hatch
The two-door Chevrolet Monza Hatch is the first of the cars made especially for Brazil that we will talk about here.
In Europe and the US, the Opel Ascona, similar to our Monza, had four doors.
Created exclusively for Brazil, the hatchback configuration was a gamble by the automaker to compete with other models of its kind in the market.
However, ironically, it had little success and was discontinued after only six years on the market.
When we talk about the Monza, we're talking about the classic sedan that we still miss today.
9. Renault Duster Oroch
The Duster Oroch pickup truck is another example that was designed for Brazil.
As the name and appearance suggest, the pickup truck is inspired by the Duster SUV.
The Duster Oroch arrived in Brazil in 2015, a little before the Toro, but ended up being overshadowed by its rival and became a mere supporting player.
Developed and produced for Brazil, there's a very curious fact about it:
The Duster Oroch has excellent sales figures in neighboring countries such as Argentina and Colombia.
In Brazil, she only gets along well with those who work in the fields.
8. Chevrolet Corsa Sedan
One of the automakers that developed the most exclusive vehicles for Brazil was Chevrolet.
Thus, the Corsa Sedan is yet another car made especially for Brazil.
Models created from the Corsa Hatch, such as the pickup truck and the Wagon, were very successful outside of Brazil.
However, the sedan version was exclusive to Brazilians.
For 10 years, between 2002 and 2012, Brazilians had access to what was an excellent example of a vehicle to drive here.
7. Dodge D100 Double Cab
Here we have a huge, unreliable vehicle that only ever drove around here!
Experts in automotive history estimate that production exceeded just over 2,000 units.
Of all these units, the majority had a single cab.
However, the double-cab version was created exclusively for Brazil.
And this is where the problem lies.
The creation for Brazil was a truly shoddy adaptation, in the literal sense of the word.
That's because it only had two doors and the wheelbase wasn't modified.
Thus, the vehicle was cramped and had strange and unsafe handling.
Definitely a real blunder.
6. Peugeot Hoggar
In 2010, after the 206 range was restyled and renamed the 207, Peugeot launched a compact pickup truck: the famous Hoggar.
The intention was obvious: to compete on equal footing with the Saveiro and Montana.
However, as many people already know, the small pickup truck of French origin was a disappointment.
Developed for the Brazilian market, the solution to mitigate the losses was to market the product in other South American countries.
But again, the plan backfired. Production, which began in 2010, ended in 2014.
The Hoggar's biggest drawbacks were its disproportionate headlights and taillights, pointed front end, and weak engine for heavy loads.
A shameful exclusivity.
5. Ford Fiesta Sedan
The Ford Fiesta Sedan is another rather curious case of cars made especially for Brazil.
That's because it only appeared when it was already in its fourth generation.
Targeting large families, Ford developed the vehicle, which was well-received here.
The success was seen as positive, and so the model gradually spread to other countries, most of them here in South America.
The model was produced here in Brazil between 2003 and 2014, and even today, many people are looking to buy one.
4. Fiat Tempra two-door
The Tempra is a true case of love it or hate it.
When compared to its European counterpart, the Brazilian Tempra had many exclusive features.
The first highlight of our Tempra was its independent McPherson-type rear suspension.
Which, incidentally, pleased many people.
But the most striking exclusive feature was the two-door body, which didn't exist anywhere else on the planet.
However, unfortunately for the automaker, the two-door Tempra arrived at a bad time.
In fact, it was during a transitional period, when Brazilians were looking for four-door cars.
Thus, the Fiat Tempra only existed between the years 1992 and 1994. A short life.
3. Chevrolet Chevy 500
And here we have another example from Chevrolet.
The Chevy 500 was the first to enter the compact pickup truck segment in Brazil.
As you can easily see, the model is derived from the Chevette and arrived on the market in the early 80s.
The Saveiro and Ford Pampa came soon after, starting a war of small pickup trucks.
Originating in Brazil, the Chevy 500 conquered the world and reached almost every market where GM operated.
Here, it was around for quite a while and only went out of production in 1995.
2. Volkswagen Santana two-door
Here we have a classic from the manufacturer in MANY markets.
However, VW only sold the two-door Santana to Brazilians.
The model was created to cater to local tastes, which in the 70s and 80s preferred two-door cars instead of four.
Thus, the wish of the Brazilian people was fulfilled.
The two-door configuration had a large market share until the early 1990s.
It was from the 1990s onwards that Brazilians' preference for four-door cars began to change.
Thus, the two-door Santana was discontinued at the end of 1995.
1. VW Polo Sedan
And to round out our list of 10 cars made especially for Brazil, we have the Polo Sedan.
But here, an important addendum is necessary.
Since its second global generation, the Polo has offered a sedan configuration in many countries.
However, the three-box body style of its second generation was specially created by VW's Brazilian department.
This development occurred at a time when the compact sedan segment was experiencing significant growth.
The Polo Sedan and Hatchback were produced until 2015. After a one-year hiatus, the range returned to the market in 2017, already with the new generation.
However, the three-volume configuration was unique to us, including an even longer wheelbase, but it was renamed Virtus.
