Can a car from an auction be driven?

You might be wondering: can a car from an auction be driven on the road or not?

In fact, a car bought at auction can be classified in two different ways, and that's what determines whether or not it can be driven normally on streets and highways.

A car at auction can be classified as either scrap or in good condition.

So, the answer to the question is: Yes.

A car purchased at auction can be driven, provided it is properly maintained!

If the car won at auction is in good condition, then yes, it can be... run normally without any problems whatsoever for its new owner.

However, depending on the origin of the purchased vehicle, it is important to find out if it is necessary to re-register it with the Detran (Department of Motor Vehicles), which, as many know, is the body responsible for regulating all types of automobiles that circulate in the country.

It is still important for the owner to pay the vehicle tax (IPVA) for the year in question and any outstanding bureaucratic issues related to the auctioned car.

Therefore, before bidding to try and close a deal at auction, we at Senhor Carros recommend that you find out the car's history and any outstanding issues to avoid any future problems.

If the auctioned car is classified as scrap, on the other hand, it is not entitled to new documentation and therefore cannot be used.

In these cases, the cars are sold directly to junkyards and scrap yards.

As we mentioned, participating in a car auction has become a common alternative for those who want to buy a vehicle in good condition at cheaper and more accessible prices.

If you also want to know how to legalize a car from an auction so you can drive it, check out the steps below!

Step 4: Verify all documentation.

A car purchased at auction can only be registered if its registration document indicates minor or moderate damage.

In other words, reversible damage that does not compromise the car's functionality.

Conferir a documentação é parte fundamental para regularizar o carro de leilão
Checking the documentation is a fundamental part of legalizing an auction car.

Therefore, lots with a large quantity of vehicles considered scrap, with more than 75% of their bodywork compromised, cannot have their documentation regularized.

That's why the first step is to evaluate the vehicle's documentation before bidding on it.

Furthermore, it's important to mention that it's possible and relatively easy to find cars at auction without any kind of damage. In other words, without any defects.

Step 3: Perform the CSV inspection.

After analyzing After assembling the car, the next step is the inspection.

One of the main steps for those asking if an auctioned car can be driven on the road is to obtain the vehicle's registration and carry out the CSV inspection – Vehicle Safety Certificate.

This document declares that the vehicle is fit to be driven again.

This inspection will verify several safety items, such as the electrical system, alignment, balancing, and many other points.

Inspeção é passo de grande importância para regularizar veículo de leilão para rodar
Inspection is a crucial step in legalizing an auction vehicle for road use.

To complete this important step, you need to obtain prior inspection authorization from the Detran (Department of Motor Vehicles) and take your driver's license and vehicle registration document to a specialized inspection station accredited by Inmetro (National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology).

Step 2: Pay attention to deadlines.

When you win a car at auction, the auction house that sold it is responsible for setting the deadlines and conditions for registering the vehicle, and is responsible for initiating the documentation process with the Department of Motor Vehicles (Detran) and the previous owner of the car.

Therefore, it is important that the car buyer, in this case you, pay attention to the deadlines agreed upon with the company and closely monitor the regularization process.

This prevents missed deadlines, fines, headaches, and consequently, losses.

Step 1: Authorization from the Department of Motor Vehicles

And the final step is authorization from the Department of Motor Vehicles!

After the inspection of the auctioned vehicle and obtaining the CSV certificate, it is necessary to go to the Detran (Department of Motor Vehicles) to initiate the administrative process for regularizing the documents.

The car buyer is responsible for submitting the auction receipt to the department within a fixed period of 30 days.

It is important to know that delays in submitting the requested documentation will result in a fine and three points on your driver's license.

To legalize the purchase of an auctioned car, the buyer must go to the Detran (Department of Motor Vehicles) with the following documents:

  • Request for release of claim;
  • Original purchase invoice for the car at auction, issued by the auctioneer;
  • Original auction record also issued by the auctioneer;
  • Originals and copies of personal documents, such as ID card, CPF (Brazilian tax identification number), and proof of residence;
  • Vehicle registration certificate – CRV;
  • Vehicle safety certificate – CSV;
  • Inspection report obtained from an Accredited Inspection Company – ECV;
  • Bank receipt proving payment of the CRV issuance fee – Vehicle Registration Certificate.

Another important point to mention here is that the minimum timeframe for the Department of Motor Vehicles (Detran) to process the registration of a duly documented auction vehicle ranges from 30 to 90 business days.

Conclusion

As you just discovered, a car from an auction can be driven without any problem.

Although it's a great opportunity to buy a car at a more affordable price, getting the car running is a bit of a hassle, and that puts off those who don't like bureaucracy.
