THE SubaruFuji, is a Japanese automotive company, a subsidiary of the industrial group Fuji Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (FHI). The American company General Motors once held a minority stake in 20%.
Founded on May 15, 1953, it was one of the first automobile companies in Japan. "Subaru," which is the Japanese name for the Pleiades star cluster, is represented in the company logo. Despite being a small company in the automotive industry compared to many of its competitors, Subaru has been a highly profitable company for many years. It is notable for its production of conventional automobiles (semi-series, station wagons, and hatchbacks) with 4x4 all-wheel drive (in fact, in many of the markets where it operates, the only vehicle offered by the brand is with this type of drive), in addition to using a boxer engine with four cylinders opposed in pairs.
The best-known vehicles of the Subaru brand are the turbocharged versions of the Legacy and Impreza models. Modified versions of their WRX model and the Subaru Impreza WRX STi have been successfully competing for years in rally events such as the World Rally Championship.
