The company, founded in 1963 by Ferruccio Lamborghini (1916–1993) as a subsidiary of his successful tractor factory Lamborghini Trattori SpA, now part of the Volkswagen AG group, operates as a subsidiary of Audi AG, where it exchanges technologies between the Audi R8 and the latest Lamborghini models.
Before making cars, Ferruccio Lamborghini built tractors using World War II tank engines. He decided to settle in Sant'Agata Bolognese and hired a number of renowned engineers to build his cars, such as Bizzarrini, Dallara, and Stanzani.
