FIAT (Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino) is one of the brands of Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, one of the world's largest automobile manufacturers, headquartered in Turin, northern Italy. The company Fiat Automobiles SpA was formed in January 2007 when Fiat reorganized its automotive business, and traces its history back to 1899, when the first Fiat was produced.
FIAT is an acronym for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (“Italian Automobile Factory of Turin” in English), but it can also mean “let it be done” in Latin. The company was founded by Giovanni Agnelli on July 11, 1899. After the First World War, with government support, the company began investing in various areas, such as the jet market, tractors, trains, and construction. Gianni Agnelli, Giovanni Agnelli's grandson, headed FIAT from 1966 until his death in January 2003, when he was succeeded by his brother Umberto Agnelli. After Umberto's death in 2004, Luca Cordero di Montezemolo was appointed president of the company, but Agnelli's heir, John Elkann, became vice-president at the age of 28. Other members of the Agnelli family remain in management.
